The list is ranked alphabetical according to bands. It will be in constant progress (at least until January 2015) to get an overview on some anticipated melodic metal to be released in 2014 (all albums will remain on this list after being released). The styles chosen for each album/band are just roughly put down.

If you're aware of some interesting stuff coming out, let me know!

I saw information about new Iron Maiden and Judas Priest albums... Well, would you be so kind to tell whether they really are going to record new albums? Is it confirmed, or is it a some kind of gossip? Thank you, anyway!

I think a new Priest this year is pretty much confirmed! As for Maiden, I have no clue. My guess is they'll release a new one this year or the next one. But I really don't know.

Well, concerning Iron Maiden I have found an interview, where Harrison had confirmed that they were going to studio to make new release) But as for Judas Priest I was able to find only pretty old information and interviews being made exactly after the Epitaph tour. We have to wait.

Power metal.

And you wouldn't describe power metal as melodic? I'm pretty sure melody and harmony are key characteristics of power metal, no?

Well, yeah. You're right. It's evolving.

But, I always seen the cliche of been theatrical, fusion of symphonic with dominating chorus. Melodic thing never left much prescence in power metal region tbh.

Power metal is the first thing that crosses my mind when I think about melodic metal.
Also, I highly doubt that there will be any death metal in new anathema tbh.

When I mentioned Melodic Metal I meant more or less Heavy, Power, Progressive, Symphonic, Gothic, etc, and not the more agressive stuff like Black, Thrash, Death, etc. I don't know if that's the correct moniker for it, or if there is one at all. I've seen Melodic Metal being mentioned about bands/albums that are hard to classify when they sound like Power Metal, Heavy Metal, Hard Rock and AOR at the same time (like a fusion between those styles or something). I just used it for this list to cover the metal styles that are less brutal/agressive than others.

I think you may want to add Instanzia's upcoming Spinning Maze in your list. It's an amazing Canadian power metal band which I believe deserves greater attention!

I would definitely say so, yes. I've seen some genre-tags of "melodic power metal".

Agreed, it's a bit of a misfire. It's a bit like saying, that the heavier/more agressive full-blown Power Metal albums have little to no melody.
Kamerian - 16.04.2014 at 16:36
This list is pretty much all over the place as far as genres are concerned. Looks like over half of it is Power Metal. Don't get me wrong, I like Power Metal, but it is NOT the same genre as Melodic Metal. Power Metal is created around the double-bass drum...you simply can't escape this in any self-respecting PM band...that is THE defining characteristic of PM. Whereas MM usually has little to no double beat and tends to be a little more melodically oriented (again, don't get me wrong, PM tends to be melodic also, just not quite as much)...leans just a tad bit more towards mainstream rock.

I totally agree with you, I just used the "melodic" tag to seperate the focus of this list from the more brutal and agressive styles. Even though a lot of the list is oriented towards Power, there's also Prog, Symphonic, etc, so the "melodic" tag just felt right. I also agree with your definition of Melodic Metal, as its own style, being very rockish (somewhere between Heavy Metal and Hard Rock?). But for this list it's only present to represent which styles that are in focus.
