Often loathed by fans of more underground forms of Metal, groove metal nonethless offers the metal fan a heavy yet song based and catchy listening experience. This list captures 15 of the most interesting groove metal albums (my opinion of course).
Not surprising genre pioneers Pantera dominate in the same fashion that Slayer and Metallica dominate many Thrash lists.
Yeah, really enjoy some of these albums. Pantera and Machine Head. Strangely, when those albums came out in the first half of the 1990s, I really wasn't into it much. Love it now though. Also enjoy LoG too.
Throwdown - Venom & Tears
Grip Inc. - Solidify
Damageplan - New Found Power
Dagoba - What Hell is About
Exhorder - Slaughter In The Vatican.
PDP - Floating Dream( well, its a pure math metal record but I'd some find good groovy elements in it).
Exhorder are certainly more groove metal than Devildriver or Anthrax. Also there is way too much Pantera worship where just Cowboys and Vulgar would do, and then there's the sad lack of Five Finger Death Punch, Throwdown, Byzantine, Common Dead, Hellyeah and Switchtense.
To be fair I don't think Five Figer Death Punch are that good and Hellyeah sound terrible (their vocalist especially). Why include them for diversity's sake when they're not that good?
As for Common Dead, Byzantine and Switchtense, I've never heard them. Switchtense is an obscure Portugueuse band on an equally obscure label and Common Dead appear to be completely independent hence not exactly well known now - all this from Metal Archives.
It appears somewhat bizarre to note a sad lack of bands that are generally complete unknowns.
I thought Throwdown were Metalcore in the vein of Hatebreed?
First Exhorder album is way more Slayer inspired than groove metal DevilDriver is way more groove. Only the extremely average The Law by Exhorder can be considered groove.
And totally agree with deadone that Hellyeah are totally terrible. And Five Finger Death Punch are quite crap too.
As for the amount of Pantera in this list, I'd say "rightly so and totally deserved, since they are the epitome of groove metal and NO they did NOT rip off Exhorder" All those four albums deserve a place here and tbh Vulgar Display Of Power is better than Cowboys From Hell. For me Far Beyond Driven is also better than Cowboys.
