Thumbs up: +16
***Probably not gonna be updated a lot for the next 3 months (until July)***

If you're wondering what all those crazy symbols mean, keep reading this introductory text.

This list ranks all the albums I've listened to (that were released in 2014) and lists all the ones I'm planning on listening to. I decided to get rid of the albums I didn't enjoy, because... Well... Why would I want to keep them here? There are also some awards at the bottom, check it out.

❤: Loved it (ordered according to preference)
♫: Very entertained (ordered alphabetically)
✔: Entertained (ordered alphabetically)

This list is completely personal, it's made by me and for me, because I find I listen to a lot more music because of this list and it's helpful to keep track of the ones I want to listen to (more often.) However, that doesn't mean that you can't benefit from this list! If you discover that you have similar tastes to mine then it might be a good idea to follow this list and discover great music this year! Yay! AND: If you find yourself enjoying a lot of the albums I marked "❤" or "♫" you can always leave some recommendations! Really though, recommendations are much appreciated (even if your tastes are not that similar, but you can't find your favorite 2014 album anywhere on the list. Just put it in an anger-filled ALL-CAPS comment.)

Please don't take the genres too literally, they're just a general indicator, I'm not an expert. And the little mini-reviews are intentionally ultra-short and don't give much info.

Other 2014 lists I approve of:

1. Hail Spirit Noir - Oi Magoi
❤ Progressive Black Metal :: Brilliant and just generally a lot of fun. One of those bands that prove you can still do something new with the genre without going too overboard on the crazy scale.
2. Lascaille's Shroud - Interval 02: Parallel Infinities - The Abscinded Universe
❤ Progressive Space Death Metal :: MASSIVE album, and it really takes space-opera-themed metal to a new level.
3. Major Parkinson - Twilight Cinema
❤ Progressive Cabaret Rock :: For all its cabaret-ness, it's also just a really beautiful album.
4. The Oath - The Oath
❤ Heavy Metal :: Nothing new, but holy hell I love this. Has that occult vibe + great female vocals.
5. Altar Of Betelgeuze - Darkness Sustains The Silence
❤ Stoner/Death Doom Metal :: I don't think I've ever heard such a successful blend of death doom and stoner.
6. Lethe - When Dreams Become Nightmares
❤ Electro Avantgarde Metal :: I love the Jazz thing they've got going on, blended with all this other stuff. Amazing.
7. Kuolemanlaakso - Tulijoutsen
❤ Progressive Death Doom Metal :: One of the things that often bothers me about doom metal is that it takes a while to get started or that it is just slow. It has to be REALLY good to be interesting for me (like Esoteric good). This album doesn't have trouble taking off.
8. Aenaon - Extance
♫ Avantgarde Black Metal
9. Alkerdeel - Dyodyo Asema [Collaboration]
♫ Experimental Drone Black Metal :: This shit is creepy.
10. Bast - Spectres
♫ Black/Sludge/Doom Metal :: Very strong debut, and it knows when to stop.
11. Dephosphorus - Ravenous Solemnity
♫ Blackened Grindcore or Astrogrind :: Read !J.O.O.E.!'s staff pick.
12. Dread Sovereign - All Hell's Martyrs
♫ Doom Metal
13. Gamma Ray - Empire Of The Undead
♫ Power Metal (the kind I like, despite its cheese) :: Big step up from To The Metal, still has filler, but what Gamma Ray album doesn't? Just cut away the filler in their albums and most of them end up being 40 minutes of great power metal.
14. The Great Old Ones - Tekeli-Li
♫ Black Metal
15. Indian - From All Purity
♫ Ear-Rape :: It's too noisy for me, but I like it. So yeah. Figure that out.
16. Morbus Chron - Sweven
♫ Progressive Death/Thrash Metal
17. Nasheim - Solens Vemod
♫ Black Metal
18. Omnerod - Ivory Dune
♫ Progressive Death Metal :: If this were a bit shorter it'd be top-tier material. Still a unique album though there are some filler moments.
19. Slough Feg - Digital Resistance
♫ Heavy Metal :: Slough Feg are BACK!
20. Warforged - Essence Of The Land
♫ Technical Deathcore :: Apparently I like -core things now.
21. Ashen Horde - Sanguinum Vindicta
✔ Progressive Black Metal
22. Behemoth - The Satanist
✔ Death Metal :: Cliche title aside, I didn't expect to like a Behemoth album this much. And by "much" I mean it's alright.
23. Conquering Dystopia - Conquering Dystopia
✔ (Instrumental) Progressive Metal :: Pretty "normal" for an instrumental metal album, but enjoyable nonetheless. Also, it's never bad to have some more Jeff Loomis music, though I wish it'd be in the form of a Nevermore reunion.
24. Contrastic - Jařmo
✔ Death Metal/Grindcore :: Enjoyable, but only for like 5 minutes. Because it doesn't even reach the five minute mark -_-
25. Delain - The Human Contradiction
✔ Symphonic Metal
26. Dirge - Hyperion
✔ Atmospheric Sludge Metal
27. Hannes Grossmann - The Radial Covenant
✔ Technical Death Metal :: Pretty much Obscura. Can't say that's a bad thing since Hannes plays a big role in that band as well.
28. Hirsute - Still Waiting
✔ Death Doom Metal :: Cool to see a short doom metal release for a change.
29. Inferi - The Path Of Apotheosis
✔ Superfastmodeshredderificcheesymelodicmetalonspeed :: Genre description basically says it all.
30. Iron Savior - Rise Of The Hero
✔ Power Metal (the kind with at least half a nut) :: Let's see if Gamma Ray can beat this.
31. Janvs - Nigredo
✔ Black Metal
32. Kampfar - Djevelmakt
✔ Folk Black Metal
33. Lurk - Kaldera
✔ Sludge/Doom Metal
34. Mechina - Xenon
✔ Symphonic Death Metal :: About equal with Empyrean (V. 2), so not their greatest work, but still enjoyable.
35. Persuader - The Fiction Maze
✔ Power Metal (the kind with at least one nut) :: Nothing new for this band, but solid nonetheless.
36. Primalfrost - Prosperous Visions
✔ Extreme Power :: About 5-10 minutes too long, but other than that some solid cheese.
37. Prostitute Disfigurement - From Crotch To Crown
✔ Brutal Death Metal :: Sometimes I understand the lyrics, which takes me out of the cool music.
38. Random - Pidanoma
✔ Progressive Metal :: Cats
39. Soulmass - The Painted World
✔ Death Metal :: Only one original song here (and an Unleashed cover), but it shows potential.
40. What I'm Hoping To Listen To:

I like where this is going. You should make this a yearly list after you're done listening, Zap. It'd be interesting to see how your tastes match up with mine.
Lit. - 24.01.2014 at 19:46
Concerning the image, I guess an alternate name for the list could be "AM I NOT ENTERTAINED?!"

We'll see how it goes, but I might end up doing more
And I guess one of the main differences between you and me would be that you'd just have way more albums on your list and I don't like most djent, that too.

I'll think about it, I'm actually still looking for a better image

A checklist of sorts, eh? Pretty good idea. I've only listened to three 2014 albums: Hail Spirit Noir (great or even excellent album), Mechina (great stuff) and Alcest (very enjoyable relaxing music, I don't see what's so bad about it... must be cool to hate it for not being metal ).

A checklist of sorts, eh? Pretty good idea. But damn man, you've listened to a lot of new albums already in such a short time. I've only listened to 3 2014 albums: Hail Spirit Noir (great or even excellent album), Mechina (great stuff) and Alcest (very enjoyable relaxing music, I don't see what's so bad about it... must be cool to hate it for not being metal ).

For now I still have time to listen to a lot of stuff, but starting February I won't, which is why I made this list
Also, I don't hate the new Alcest, I would even say the new one is quite solid, but I just don't feel like listening to it again (not that I listen to their other albums that much). As I hope you know, I'm not afraid of music that's not metal
Scratch that, I listened to more music in February than in any other month in my life

Yeah, I know you also listen to non-metal stuff but I've seen people who hate the new Alcest because it's not metal. Obviously you're not one of those people.

But I get what you're saying. Having only spun it twice, I feel like it's nice relaxing stuff but not overly interesting music to listen to, in contrary to, say, the new Hail Spirit Noir.

Yeah Oi Magoi is quite a gem (and very fun to pronounce in all sorts of different accents)
Zaphod - 25.01.2014 at 11:52
Okay, I changed it up, looks better this way.
MechanisT - 29.01.2014 at 22:41
How's the new Contrastic EP? Is it worth my time, or has redundancy crept in their sound? Asking this coz I'm not too big on EPs, but this one's definitely piqued an interest.

Well, let's just say it entertained me, but not longer than 5 minutes. Because the whole thing literally isn't longer than five minutes. It's definitely worth your time since it barely takes any to listen to. I must say I was hesitant to put it on this list, but I decided to just put everything I listen to that's released in 2014 in here.
Has redundancy crept in their sound? A little bit. The two songs are not of the same quality found on the full-length in my opinion. It's all the way at the bottom of the albums marked "✔" for a reason, but it did entertain me.
Now, in the time it takes you to read this reply, you could have actually just listened to the damn thing (it's on bandcamp)

True. I guess I shouldn't be too picky on them for being rusty. I'll be picking this one up along the way then. Thanks for the detailed feedback matey.
And well, that's the thing. I'm hardly gonna have any time for doing even that this year so... unless it's extremely enticing, expect me to not bother trying to listen to everything/anything that comes my way. :p

So I guess we can't expect another mega-list?
And same here by the way. Starting next week I probably won't be able to listen to a lot either, so I'll just keep adding stuff to this list whenever I get the chance and then hopefully listen to most of it in August.

Haha, I'm just messing around in those lower ranked albums, but cool to see someone agree
Now I don't think Kindly Bent To Free Us is bad, I just didn't enjoy it that much but I can see it has quality. (And just for your information, I'm not a big Cynic fan so it's not like their change of sound disappointed me or anything)

Of course. Kindly Bent To Free Us will be one of THOSE albums that will contain the full range of opinions, and finding someone who didn't enjoy it really won't be hard. I just personally found it to be their best release yet!

By the way, check out the newly-added awards section.

It's indeed an awesome album though, I can't stop listening to it...
