Nice looking list. I'd probably just make it one album per band though, then you can get a few more modern classics in there from other bands.

Thank you. I limited it to one album per band when I originally made it but I just felt certain bands such as Cobalt and BaN deserved to be mentioned twice.

I do really enjoy that album. I think I may have overlooked it when making this list because I considered their last album to be rather terrible.
!J.O.O.E.! - 29.07.2014 at 22:40
Can't argue with that. BaN especially considering that they / he tackled quite a few different styles.

Gators Unfurl is pretty bad, but TGSD is miles (country miles, even ) better.

That was fantastic. I think I had heard snippets of that album before but I hadn't listened to the whole thing until now. It will most assuredly join this list after a few more listens.

No offence, Neachy. But, black metal lists are now gettin' supper annoying. With same albums on roaster picked up by different users and representing in their own way has personally bored me to death.

Don't make it like it happens in claw crane game.

Okay. Unless you enjoy being annoyed perhaps you should avoid clicking on lists with "BLACK METAL" in the title. Just a suggestion. As for the rest of what you wrote, I can't make heads or tails of it so I'll just take it as insulting and offer you the two finger salute Good day, sir.
Troy Killjoy - 31.07.2014 at 06:11
Nicely said Neachy. I for one hope you make a black metal list for every year since its inception.

Even Bad English/K7 makes more sense than that annoying so-called Metalhead

Dude, this is one awesome list. Currently I have listened to 27 out of 31 albums of your list and most of them are great if not excellent.

So yeah, my +1 isn't so much for discovering more great music, but rather for my appreciation of a really good list.

Agreed. 1 album/band suits a short list like this better. Then again, Neachy makes a fair point about some bands deserving 2 albums on this list. So I guess you can just ignore this post.

I also second Krallice (With Dimensional Bleedthrough being their best). Not Ygg, though. Terribly boring.

I'm revisiting Diabolical Masquerade. How about Death's Design?

Also, some sigh also would be good, too. I'm not professionally familiar with their disco but they sure as hell have nice tunes.

Verdunkeln, what an amazing album that one is. Will check out Diabolical Masquerade, thanks for the recommendation (even though it wasn't directed at me).

I suppose you have listened to at least one, but I would say give Massive Conspiracy Against All Life another try. It is my favourite, but many would disagree and recommend another. They say it's supposed to be the second Lurker album released under Leviathan's name. I learned that after listening to it, and it might explain why I prefer this one.

I need to give Negura Bunget another listen. Heard it several years ago and didn't think much of it but my taste has changed quite a bit since then. As for Agalloch, I really enjoy them but their best ones (The Mantle and AATG) aren't really black metal imo.

I can kind of understand Agalloch not being here because it's mostly post-rock and neofolk and ambient drone mixed with some black metal, but Negura Bunget's string of "N Crugu Bradului", "Om" and "Maiestrit" is black metal royalty. Also make sure to give Dordeduh a listen, a band of 2/3 of the original Negura Bunget members.

I just cannot get into Botanist. Which album would you say is most deserving? Doom In Bloom? As for Oranssi Pazuzu, you may be right that they deserve a spot on this list but none of their albums have completely swept me off my feet, so to speak. I'll go ahead and relisten to OP's first two albums to reassess my stance.

The debut is generally regarded as the most batshit and chaotic, but I think that that's a case where doing so actually works to the project's detriment, more than its benefit. Doom In Bloom and the most recent one (Flora, I think) are far more refined, probably my two favorites.

As for Oranssi Pazuzu, everything by them is great, but it's really Kosmonument that sweeps me off my feet. The most recent one that I just reviewed is pretty up there as well.

The longest track on their new one makes the rest of the album seem pedestrian by comparison.

You're right, that's easily the highlight in my book, but I wouldn't really say the rest of the album suffers from a huge drop in quality from there.
What would be very interesting though would be if Oranssi just did one of those albums that's like an hour long, but with three 20 minute tracks, or something like that. I definitely think this is a band where "longer = better." Some of their shorter, 4 - 5 minute tracks are excellent as well, don't get me wrong, but I always get the impression that they feel more like appetizers for the full meal, rather than the full meal itself.

It's not groundbreaking or anything. It's similar to good Watain and Funeral Mist. I made an effort to include both stuff on the experimental/forward thinking end of bm as well as stuff that I think does a good job of capturing what made bm great to begin with such as this and Cultes Des Ghoules.

Yeah, maybe an album of improvisation a la Chaos Echoes. It might serve their jammy tendencies well.

Most definitely. Or just a purely instrumental album, I could definitely go with an album's worth of tracks somewhat akin to this. Always been one of my favs out of the band's entire discography

Haha I noticed that as well. As tempting as it is to just throw one more on here for the sake of round numbers I intend to keep updating as I find new deserving albums. So the number will most likely always be irritatingly odd.
