Album & Artist Impressions (Part 2)

Thumbs up: 0
A list of albums I listen to and rated with a small commentary. This list is not meant to have an order, or a best-to-worst classification.

For some reason, I could not fill in more stuff on the first list, beyond no. 61. Probably due to word limit. Links to other lists:

1. Black Sabbath - Headless Cross
This is the best metal album that Black Sabbath has made without their two, most iconic, notorious and memorable singers, Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio. Frankly I never understood why this album gets ignored or even hated by Sabbath fans, particularly Sabbath fans that enjoyed and appreciated the albums made with Dio. The material here is not much different from what we hear on Heaven and Hell or Mob Rules. Or even Dehumanizer. The crux of this album is the presence of Tony Martin, a very underrated heavy metal vocalist. I get a sheep-mentality vibe whenever I listen to this, as I fail to see why would a fan of Dio hate this record. Or ignore it. Anyway, plenty of great tracks here, the title track, the excellent Devil and Daughter, the ominous When Death Calls where Brain May plays a guitar solo and the catchy and spooky Call of the Wild. The ending track is solid as well. Only the 5th and 7th tracks are kinda average. A very strong heavy metal album which deserves more attention. Rating: 8
2. Judas Priest - Ram It Down
This album has the privilege, or rather the unlucky situation in being sandwiched between a glam album that infuriated and alienated many fans (not me though) and probably the pinnacle of heavy metal albums, the very peak this genre managed to reach in power and aggression (without leaving the boundaries of this genre). Ram It Down per see is not a bad album at all, but sometimes timing has a better card to play when it comes to fans deciding the worth of certain music. The music here is connecting night and day essentially, as it contains heavy songs and glam songs and a combination of both. Still, the music here is very energetic. The title track, Hard as Iron, the epic ballad Blood Red Skies, Thunder Zone and the gargantuan ending track, Monsters of Rock surely pack the perfect punch. No idea why this gets so ignored. Some of the material here, if it had been given the same production as Painkiller got, it would have been even better. Rating: 7.5 (rounded to 8)
3. Darkthrone - Old Star
A bit old, a bit samey, a tad too simplistic but nevertheless a decent offering from Darkthrone. I do not know why this band is still being associated with black metal at this stage. They began as one, they were one for like 15 years, but ever since around 2005, this band switched to a very primitive form of old school heavy metal. The only thing black metal about this record is the rather old-school atmosphere which gives the production a certain mood and edge that modern heavy metal bands don't have and maybe, maybe the vocals. The term black 'n' roll is even more cretinous. Anyway, how does Fenriz justify this clean production? The guy was clearly a fan of raw, almost sewer productions. He needs to be interrogated by the black metal militia. 'What mushrooms did you eat the weeks before mastering this album?'. 'The Colombian ones as the Bolivian ones were seized by FBI'. Enough with the silliness. This is a decent effort, albeit it suffers from a certain stupid perception, that making overlong songs makes them more epic. The only rather long song that works is the first one. The absolute highlight being the shortest one. Nocturno Culto seems to have been the more solid songwriter this time as Fenriz's half is rather uneven. Rating: 6
