As usual, great list. Only one I haven't listened to is the Atramentus so I'll definitely be checking that out. I'm also surprised Sempiternal Deathreign aren't featured here, that needs to be rectified.

That's a real solid list. A lot of great records on there. Why not start in '82 with Death Penalty though?

Atramentus is a great one. Though after a couple weeks listening to nothing but the best Doom metal ever made while making this list it doesn't stand out as much as when I was mainly comparing it to all the new shit I listen to. Damn recency bias.
As always, great to see you around the site. Your active presence is missed. This site is much less entertaining without you, Joe, Marcel and several others that have faded away to varying degrees.

Honestly, that would be a great starting point but one could also argue it should start with Sabbath. I was halfway tempted to start with Candlemass as that's really where my interest with the genre starts. It was really just an arbitrary year choice as its debatable where the genre really went from hard rock to metal.

Your picture for the list deserves a thumbs up alone. That's perfect for this list. Excellent list, as always. Lots of familiar faces on here. A little surprised The Ruins of Beverast didn't make the cut in any given year, but as you noted some really stiff competition in certain years.
I look forward to your 2021 list and other lists.

I appreciate that! I spent quite a while finding the perfect picture. As far as TRoB goes, their 1st two LPs are my favorites (particularly Rain Upon The Impure) and I'm not really a fan of the last 3 (sincerely hoping to love the upcoming album). For the purposes of reductive genre categorization for my lists I lean toward putting the first two albums in the black metal camp despite obviously being a mix of black and doom. This decision is supported by the database categorizing the first two only as black metal. The first album could easily be a contender to fill the second spot in 2004 if I would consider it as doom metal. Both albums are featured on my black metal list, hence my hesitation to feature either one here

After I made my post I suspected that you excluded them as a result of them leaning far more to the black side. Totally makes sense to me! I'll have to look over your black metal list again. I know I've checked it before and as always agree with your choices.
The new single from TRoB was quite interesting. I'll be curious how it fits into the context of the whole album.
