This is a list of what I believe are the most overrated bands in metal. They are not in any particular order, with the exception of the first two. Also, it should be noted that just because a band is on this list, it does not mean that I don't enjoy them or that I think they are a bad band. The critics and their fanbase just pump them up a bit too much, in my opinion. And one final thing: Don't get butthurt.

Agree with some, disagree with some. Iron Maiden gets too much attention, but they were a big influence in the metal scene, so I think it's a little wrong to call them Overrated, same goes with Judas Priest and AC/DC.
Guns N' Roses is wayy too overrated. (In my opinion) there's numerous hard rock bands better: Van Halen, Scorpions, Winger, Aerosmith, Kiss, Billy Squier... This last one is too underrated, and all these bands are better than GnR.
Pantera is and will be always Overrated. |

You mean the one sings like Gorilla and his albums all sound alike is not overrated ? Then you should listen to Boxcar Willy (one of the member) new song - somber eyes. Sound quiet the same.
I have never seen such disrespect for Lemmy & Motorhead. I understand that Lemmy's vocals may be an acquired taste; but if you don't like them, maybe you should not bother bashing them at all. I don't like black metal for example or most death metal, especially the brutal one, but I don't go bashing and mocking those genres, it would not only be rude but also pointless.
Motorhead has never released a bad album, surely some are better and more inspired, but none is bad in my humble opinion.
Lemmy has been making music for 4 decades, he's a rockstar but still he's a down to earth individual (and I have read interviews and TV appearances enough to prove that). So he gets my respect not only as a musician, but also as a person. Not that this even matters, it's his music that I like anyway. |

1) To be fair, without Eddie Clarke Motorhead just could not work, like a rusted machine. You praised Lemmy too much.
2) If you say Motorhead never released a bad album...that's really laughable.(Are you actually Lemmy in disguise ?)
3) Negative comments are good.....helps to improve.... I thought only communist and religion like to be protected so much.
negative comments are ok, but not when you start calling musicians monkeys and so on; I praised Lemmy to much? How? All I said is that he did not make bad music and that he is a down to earth person; how is that too much??
Which album of theirs you thought as bad, I'm curious. |

ALL ! After Eddie Clarke left / after Iron Fist.
well, then I understand why you call them "overrated" when you dislike everything they did after 1982. I don't know if you are an elitist, a very demanding listener or simply absurd (no offense)
My least favorite album of theirs is 1916, although I don't think it's a bad one; Another Perfect day, Bastards, Sacrifice, Inferno, Kiss of death and Motorizer are great, Give them a second chance, I dunno, they deserve it IMO. |

Frankly, I am a perfectionist as I listening too much music. On my desk always has 8-10 new CD, averagely I buy 30 CDs in a month.
To me Motörhead was special ( how lemmy sound and rock & roll influence...). Ace of Spade was a genuine classic, non stop riffing. After Eddie Clarke left, what I can see is Lemmy kept on copying their old works. Every album sound the same to me.
Since you are a hardcore Motörhead fan, I think I got the right person to ask...I never bought a CD after Iron Fist. May be you can suggest me one of the best (after Iron Fist), I would bought that and seriously listening to it...may be you could create another Motörhead fan in the future.
I'm not a hardcore Motorhead fan, I just listen to them when I'm in the right mood.
Of all the albums I mentioned, you could start with "Inferno" which seems to be highly appreciated (and I dare say it deserves it). |

| I agree with some like Slayer, AC/DC, and Guns n' Roses, but I personally really like Iron Maiden, Tool, and Wintersun (even though they have only released one album, with their next one coming after 8 years). I would have said Metallica is overrated before, but there have actually been more people saying that "Metallica is overrated" than people actually overrating them lately. I really think Megadeth is a bit more overrated than Metallica as of late. Sure they have been a big influence all the thrashers out there, but I guess their music just isn't for me. |

| Actually why isn't Death on there? Especially for their later non death metal albums? |

They have no "non Death Metal albums". If you mean the Control Denied album, that was a side project of Chuck. |

There are as many shitty bands as there are opinions of course, but I of course respect others taste and wouldn't mention bands whose style I'm totally not into, like f. ex. Iron Maiden. I think the only fair way to judge is consider bands who play my type of metal, in which there is of course no better judge than me! In that case, the number one overrated band of all is, beyond a doubt:
OPETH
They play, on paper, the music I have always liked: Death metal, atmospheric, progressive, long songs, accoustic guitars, death growls, clean vocals. And let me be clear; I have always liked Opeth. But I have never loved them. In the beginning I bought the albums, because the seemed so promising, both in reviews and concept, but there was always something unreedemed, although I could not put my finger on it. Then it came to me; they are boring. There is the typical Opeth riff and melody line; it begins promising but the end note is monotous and unfulfilling. And if Opeth is the most overrated band, who better to sing than Micke Åkerfeldt. His growling is beautiful but his crooning; Clean and solid yes-but so booooooring!! Never challenging his voice-just laying there in the mid-spectre. It would of course have helped if the the melody lines were more interesting.
I usually find the bands categorized as "inspired by Opeth" much more interesting than Opeth themselves. On Deliverance and Ghost Reveries they touch on greatness, but as a whole they are extremely overrated. |

Nope not that one cause that's side [project, like you said. I mean especially Sound Of Perserverence, not an iotta of death metal on that one. |

I don't see why Deathspell Omega are on here. They're hardly "overrated"... or maybe i'm a delusional fanboy
Anyways... Agreed with every other band on here so that gets a +1 |

Their least Death metal album per se, granted, but an iotta or two, yes, at least. But whatever genre, not one bit overrated. |

I find it totally overrated, just look at the rating here. As if it's some godsend by the band Death. But sorry, SoP is by far their worst (imo of course, before people go on about that ) |

Yes Marcel, and you are entitled to that.
I looked through the other top bands on MS except Opeth and here are the ones(which I am in a position to review) I find overrated:
Amon Amarth
In Flames
Ensiferum
Dark Tranquillity
Katatonia
I could of course mention, say Stratovarius, who are total and utter hilarious, but that would be ridiculous, cause I don't like melodic power metal at all. But the latest Katatonia 8.6 ?? God it's boring! I guess in general I am not so much into swedish bands as others. So in general, I would say; swedish metal (and music in general) is overrated. |

I love them but I'd say they are a little. If you look at the way the metal community pleasure themselves over them then stack that up against their achievements then the level of masturbation doesn't quite match the quality of porn they're watching. I only say this because I feel they've been on a downward spiral for some years now and not really achieved anything notable in recent times. In fact I still think they're running the risk of playing themselves into technical-over-substance territory (though to me they already have). Still a very talented band but they need a refresh if you ask me. I think if you stripped away the image and the pretentious nonsense lyrics then their fanbase would be considerably smaller. |

The only bands from this list I like are Wintersun and Nile. Wintersun is definitely overrated, but I don't think Nile is. Also, this list is in serious need of:
- Metallica
- Katatonia
Still got my +1 though, because I agree with most. |
