Fave Metal Albums/EPs 1991 -2000

Period 1991-2000 is perhaps one of the most understated periods of metal because of the decline of commercial metal and the emergence of grunge and then nu-metal.

But the period saw release of some kick arse releases. In fact for yours truly it was a major milestone in metal (does help I got into metal around 1992). These are my favourite albums/EPs from the period.

1. Alice In Chains - Dirt
2. Alice In Chains - Jar Of Flies
3. Anthrax - Sound Of White Noise
4. Arch Enemy - Stigmata
5. Blaze Bayley - Silicon Messiah

Top 40 Albums That Blow My Poseur Mind

To walk the path of the metal poseur is to pick the plumpest of mainstream fruits and succour the sweet secretions contained within. It is the art of walking with giants of mainstream underground extremism whilst maintaining one foot firmly on the part of pop monumentalism.

The path is dangerous for the faux fur of metal consumerism is a tempting demon whore that claws at the inner self of underground triumphalism. These are the eagles that soar through the mind galleries of every metal poseur, no matter how compartmentalised their singularity may be.

1. Alice In Chains - Dirt
2. Anthrax - Volume 8 - The Threat Is Real
3. Artillery - By Inheritance
4. Blind Guardian - Imaginations From The Other Side
5. Blind Guardian - Nightfall In Middle-Earth

SAY WHAAAAT? Apothecary's Favorites That May Surprise You

The idea for this list was given to me by mz when I expressed that I was more excited about Blut Aus Nord's upcoming Memoria Vetusta III than their Debemur MoRTi EP. As he said: "You are known as a person with intense love for experimental/avantgarde black metal and everyone by default expects you to love a MoRT-like album more that what is probably going to be a not-so-original-melodic black metal album." While I do prefer experimental metal, and tend to lean more towards black and doom, there are plenty of more orthodox and classic releases outside of these confines that I love as well, some of which are true guilty pleasure albums. I decided to throw in some non-MS albums as well, to show that my tastes definitely aren't limited to metal. In no particular order, we have...

1. Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power
2. Marilyn Manson - Portrait Of An American Family
3. White Zombie - Astro Creep: 2000 - Songs Of Love, Destruction And Other Synthetic Delusions Of The Electric Head
4. Strapping Young Lad - Alien
5. Testament - The Ritual

Top 15 Groove Metal Albums

Often loathed by fans of more underground forms of Metal, groove metal nonethless offers the metal fan a heavy yet song based and catchy listening experience. This list captures 15 of the most interesting groove metal albums (my opinion of course).

Not surprising genre pioneers Pantera dominate in the same fashion that Slayer and Metallica dominate many Thrash lists.

1. Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power
2. Machine Head - Burn My Eyes
3. Lamb Of God - Sacrament
4. Anthrax - Sound Of White Noise
5. Sepultura - Chaos A.D.

Give In To Your Anger

We've had the Crushing and we've had the Dark, Harrowing and Ravaging, now it's time for the Anger. This list could be seen as a sort of Dance of the Dregs from those other two lists (as in albums that didn't get on either), but some of these albums to me might be classified as either or neither.

1. Abyssal - Novit Enim Dominus Qui Sunt Eius
2. Acid Bath - When The Kite String Pops
3. Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Agorapocalypse
4. Alkerdeel - Morinde
5. All Pigs Must Die - Nothing Violates This Nature

"The Greatest Vocalists In Rock/Metal Music"

This is a list with some of the greatest voices in the history of rock/metal music (in alphabetical order - by singer).

I know that there are many more great singers out there (I haven't heard them all!), and I also know that there are some really good singers left out of this list.

The criteria by which the following singers were selected are:

1. My Dying Bride - Turn Loose The Swans
2. Primordial - To The Nameless Dead
3. Watchtower - Control And Resistance
4. Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies
5. Evanescence - Fallen

Albums Named After The Reaction I Had The First Time I Listened To Them

Just to be clear, my opinion of many of these albums has changed since the first time I heard them. And I get that some other famous titles would be funny to put here, but I'm going to spoil the fun and say I want to at least be truthful.

1. Anathema - A Fine Day to Exit
2. Austrian Death Machine - Total Brutal
3. Clutch - Pure Rock Fury
4. Devin Townsend - Addicted
5. Divinefire - Farewell

A List Of Great Debut Albums

A lot of bands have great debut albums. Obviously this list is just a fraction of all the great debut albums out there, but it's a start. I'll keep expanding this list continuously, so all suggestions are welcome (granted they are featured on MS). All the albums here are ranked according to genre and then alphabetically. If a certain album belongs to the (in your opinion) wrong genre, then definitely let me know.

1. [Avantgarde]
2. Aarni - Bathos
3. Arcturus - Aspera Hiems Symfonia
4. Diablo Swing Orchestra - The Butcher's Ballroom
5. Sadness - Ames De Marbre

The Albums That Made Me Who I Am Today - Part 1: The Early Years (Work In Progress)

OK, let's get this straight right now: THIS IS NOT A LIST OF MY FAVOURITE ALBUMS. Neither is it a 'Best Of' list in any shape, manner or form. And it is also not a list of albums I consider to be important in Metal history in general (though many of them assuredly would be considered so).

What this list is:
I started thinking about why I listen to Metal, and why I listen to certain bands and not others. And how my tastes have changed enormously in the approx 15 years I've been, as one might say, a Metalhead. I thought it would be interesting to look over my collection and pick out those albums I consider to be landmarks in my listening career and write a little bit about why each is significant to me.

1. Anathema - Judgement
2. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
3. Cradle Of Filth - Midian
4. Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
5. Def Leppard - Hysteria

Just Great, Badass Debut Albums (TO BE UPDATED)

No order of position. This does exclude any pre-existing demos or EP's made before although with some having noteworthy exceptions.

And no, this shouldn't be renamed as A Hoard Of Debut Albums.
That's the great thing about metal.

1. Angel Witch - Angel Witch
2. Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
3. Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
4. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
5. Metallica - Kill 'Em All
