Top Metal Albums Each Year I Have Been Alive 1997

A little list series where I list my top 20 favorite metal albums every year starting from the year I was born in.

1997 was surprisingly a solid year for metal, a lot of great releases in black and power metal, and a very strong year for gothic metal this period was by far the golden age of gothic metal

1.Stratovarius - Visions
2.Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
3.Empyrium - Songs Of Moors And Misty Fields
4.Symphony X - The Divine Wings Of Tragedy
5.Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine: Biomech

90s Favourites (Some Obvious Choices, Some Good And Some Odd)

I kept the same title.

2.Dream Theater - Awake
3.Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade Of Gray
4.Enchant - Break
5.Marillion - Holidays In Eden

Top 200 Overrated Albums

**Trigger warning**

Albums and EPs rated 8.6+ from 100+ votes which I've given an 8 or lower to.

I've listened to and rated every album on MS that meets this criteria (at time of most recent update) - some of them multiple times - so I feel I can give my honest opinion.

The purpose of this is to list and order the albums that I simply don't "get" and to try re-listening to them in the hope of understanding why they've received so many 9 and 10 votes.

Ordered by my rating then MS rating then number of votes.

Updated: 03-Jan-24

My other lists:
Top 500 Albums (ordered & rated)
Top 25 EPs (also ordered & rated)

100 Greatest Metal Bands

Pretty self-explanatory, with a couple caveats: first, this is mostly just a list of my favorite metal bands in approximate order (after the top 10 or so the order matters far less), with extra weight given to influence and timelessness of sound; and second, the albums selected are not necessarily the band's "best" album, or even my personal favorite -- they are the albums that I feel best represent the band's classic sound and/or well-represent the span of their career. List includes all sub-genres of metal and some post-metal metal. Feel free to spew your hatred below. \m/ (xx) \m/

1.Black Sabbath - Paranoid
2.Iron Maiden - Powerslave
3.Metallica - Master Of Puppets
4.Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance
5.Slayer - Reign In Blood

Best Metal Vocalists

*** /\ UNDER CONSTRUCTION /\ *** READ ME *** List of the best metal vocalists across all subgenres. The album that best exhibits their vocals will represent them -- not necessarily the best album they appear on. I will limit myself to the very top of each sungenre (i.e. death, black, doom, etc.) for variety's sake. Also -- AND THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT -- I consider several criteria, not just raw talent. Some of the criteria are vocal range, versatility, command of voice, fit/compatibility with band, feeling/emotion/energy and originality. Feel free to bitch and moan below. \m/

1.King Diamond - Abigail
2.Judas Priest - Painkiller
3.Savatage - Gutter Ballet
4.Iron Maiden - Powerslave
5.Queensrÿche - Empire

The Best Gothic Metal Albums

Note 1: This list will take time before it gets a definitive form (or it might take forever if good gothic metal albums will be released in the future).

Note 2: Another important feature is that this list will not take into consideration the Metalstorm way of labeling what is gothic metal and what isn't. Some albums have gothic metal elements yet they are not categorized as gothic metal. No hard feelings. I am also accepting suggestions as I might slip a couple of albums in the process.

1.Estatic Fear - A Sombre Dance
2.Tiamat - Wildhoney
3.The Sins Of Thy Beloved - Lake Of Sorrow
4.Tristania - Widow's Weeds
5.Theatre Of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear

Iron Recommends: A Metal Selection

Yep, one of those lists. Everyone has one, so I thought I'd make a list of metal albums I really recommend.

This is not an absolute "best-of" list, for a few reasons:
1) I stick to one album per band, unless there's been a drastic style shift (like Katatonia's).
2) I try to cover all major subgenres fairly, so I have something for everyone. It counterbalances the tendency to list all the cool bands in a style I'm into right now (like drone or epic doom).

1.Warning - Watching From A Distance
2.Candlemass - Nightfall
3.Reverend Bizarre - In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend
4.Pagan Altar - The Lords Of Hypocrisy
5.Katatonia - Dance Of December Souls
