Quadruple A: Apothecary's Album Art Anthology

I know I probably speak for a lot of people when I say that, very often, the artwork that a band chooses for a particular album can be the icing on the cake, essential to giving a visual depiction that tops off the overall aesthetic of the music. There are plenty of albums that I simply couldn't imagine listening to without staring, zoned out, to the big ball of glorious that is their cover art. Here are some such albums. In alphabetical order by band. Links to full images of the covers have been provided, as well as credits to the artists.

1. Aarni - Bathos
2. Absu - The Sun Of Tiphareth
3. Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
4. Bathory - Blood Fire Death
5. Blue Öyster Cult - Fire Of Unknown Origin

InnerDoom

The wide spectrum of sounds expressed through the sub-genre of Doom Metal often gets shadowed by the somehow inaccessible slowness that is in its nature and so DM doesn't get the recognition it deserves for being, in my opinion, one of the most flexible sub-genre of Metal ... for that, Doom Metal has stayed among my favorite genres of music since the time I was introduced to it through My Dying Bride's "Turn Loose the Swans".

1. Esoteric - The Maniacal Vale
2. Saturnus - Martyre
3. Lacrimas Profundere - Memorandum
4. My Dying Bride - Turn Loose The Swans
5. Process Of Guilt - Erosion

mz's Favs

These are the albums which I like the most. Since I have not listened to a lot of albums( let's say, max 400 for me), it would be pretentious to make a list of my 100 favorite albums, so I keep this list short.

1. Tool - Lateralus
2. Esoteric - The Maniacal Vale
3. Lurker Of Chalice - Lurker Of Chalice
4. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
5. Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God

Iron Recommends: A Metal Selection

Yep, one of those lists. Everyone has one, so I thought I'd make a list of metal albums I really recommend.

This is not an absolute "best-of" list, for a few reasons:
1) I stick to one album per band, unless there's been a drastic style shift (like Katatonia's).
2) I try to cover all major subgenres fairly, so I have something for everyone. It counterbalances the tendency to list all the cool bands in a style I'm into right now (like drone or epic doom).

1. Warning - Watching From a Distance
2. Candlemass - Nightfall
3. Reverend Bizarre - In The Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend
4. Pagan Altar - The Lords Of Hypocrisy
5. Katatonia - Dance of December Souls

The Epics (Because I Don't Think Pyramid God Is Coming Back)

My version of The Epics (Best Songs Over 10 Minutes) only this time it's more The Epics (Songs Over 10 Minutes) because we kept griping to PG and he wouldn't update his list. According to his profile he hasn't been on in... 371 days. So I thought "Hey, why not do it myself?"
Arranged by time. If you feel or know a song should be on here, let me know. I'm a mainstream fag, so I only listen to the popular stuff. I might have missed some bands.

1. Be'lakor - Stone's Reach
2. Kalisia - Cybion
3. Sun Of The Blind - Skullreader
4. Nile - Ithyphallic
5. Nightwish - Once

2008: The Amphibian Halo (as In 'my Blurry View Of 2008')

Updated version of the list previously published here. You'll notice that the comments are a bit different for sure, as is the order:
1 to 3: best of the year (in preference order)
4 to 25: other great stuff (alphabetical order)

And then there were some average (sometimes bad, sometimes good) albums that didn't make it in this list, but they featured some of the most awesome songs of the year. Like Voices Of The Fallen by Battlelore, Dylath-Leen's Frozen Reflect On A Broken Mirror, and particularly Iced Earth's Come What May...

1. Textures - Silhouettes
2. Esoteric - The Maniacal Vale
3. Burst - Lazarus Bird
4. ADX - Division Blindée
5. Cynic - Traced In Air
