Gaze in wonder at one of Profound Lore's recent marvels.
Salt Lake City's SubRosa, skillfully avoiding the pitfalls of machismo sludge music, conjure a sound that would likely suit the female vocal aficionado as much as it would the hardened metaller. In fact one could easily recommend listening to it that way as this isn't like most ardent heavy sludge releases, the heaviness being largely replaced with an often psychedelic, dirging quality. The fuzzy guitars take a backseat (unusual for a sludge band) and are the first constituent in a sublime three-way as the grounding foundation between the off-kilter singing (and sparely used growling) and (dis)harmonies in a tug of war with the discordant violin. The real brilliance of every song, though, is the reward that awaits at the end of each. A build up, sometimes intentional repetition, before the component elements meet in crescendo that brings the violin to the foreground in a euphoric and transcendental manner. For this reason approaching SubRosa on a riff basis, which one might often do in the genre, isn't recommended.
In a sadly frequent number of cases the inclusion of the female vocal in the more extreme end of metal is typically employed for mere novelty effect (if not for the "crumpet" effect), occasionally adding another shade to the proceedings where it might. Not only do the three-fifths female outfit SubRosa manage, without effort, to waylay this unfortunate paradigm, they succeed in turning the sludge genre on its head and make the unconventional female vocal (think Bloody Panda rather than Nightwish) and the jarring violin (think A Forest Of Stars rather than Apocalyptica) its prime catalyst, creating a distinct and unusual approach to the sound. Both offbeat and dissonant whilst heavy and crushing (but not without a woman's touch) this is quite possibly the album of the year because of it.
Decent and a bit better than their previous one, but nothing earth shattering. Heard it doene before but now it's got women doing it. Grey is superior.

This, in a crowded and saturated sludge field, is very original. Female vocal + violin driven sludge isn't excatly a dime a dozen. Grey have a far more generic sound anyway, going for that "let's be as heavy and menacing as possible" approach which is totally incompatible with SubRosa's.
And marking this down for originality Marcel? (aside from your misogyny) That makes everything you like no more than a 5 then ;]

Nope not marking it down for originality, just marking it down cause it is nothing special, not even that well performed.

Not in metal Like Kutschurft sings: Metal Is Een Mannensport (Metal Is A Male Sport)
Btw that's not the reason for me dislikign SubRosa, I dis like them because they are just not good at all. Okay not as bad as Gallhammer. But just not good. average that's what these Mormon women are.

Yet you gave them a 7. Your subconscious must think it's good. You should listen to your subconscious: it has better music taste than you do

a 7 is on the top end of average... anything over 7 is good I would rate it a 6.6 actually but cause that's not possible I had to settle for a 7.

The past includes women as well. Marcel's signature for instance. Jo Bench. 95% of gothic metal bands.
At least Jo Bench doesn't sing
But then again I love Acrostichon and Thor's Hammer and both have a female vocalist.
And then again 99% of all gothic bands are crap

Yes but you can be sure that if it has a woman singing Marcel probably won't like it because of it, even when they are patently better than old-fashioned, mediocre dross like the new Loss album ;]

SubRosa better than Loss?

Better, more original, has more balls (ironically). Yep, Loss is probably the worst thing Profound Lore has put out this year (apart from the that Disma album, which belongs on the same rehash pile as Loss) and SubRosa amongst it's very best.

Originality-wise I'd agree with SubRosa topping Loss and Disma (even though I prefer Loss). Loss is pretty typical funeral/death doom while Disma is average revivalist death metal. I haven't heard sludge done like this before although I can't say I enjoyed it.

Well that's a much more honest answer than I would expect from Marcel m'boy!
Saying that about Profound Lore though we still haven't had the new Leviathan, which I have a feeling is going to be a right turkey.

Her voice ain't that much different from the girl from Reino Ermitaño, last tiem I checked you liked them so the vocals shouldn't be a problem
where the hell did I say I think the vocals suck here?
I find the music and voals nothing special. And tbh although I enjoy the vocals in Reino they are the weakest aprt of that band.

Oh, sorry, I kind of got that vibe from your comments. Brujas del Mar was a good record but yeah... Sometime her vocals were a bit annoying to me, their third cd had better vocals from what I remember though!
Ok, that was a bit offtopic

Proof that I'm not a Marcel program #1 (going to list them from now on): I really like this stuff.
#2 I don't mind female vocals are all.
Ok you get a +1 here then You should do an Agent Smith and break free of the program and kick Marcel's ass.
For me this band is all about the interplay between the vocals, asymmetric violin and the underlying guitar which lays more of a groundwork than being in-you-face like most sludge bands.
