By the time Anathema released their EP The Crestfallen, they were already beat compared to the other Peaceville trio bands that defined death-doom. Paradise Lost had already released their third album Shades of God by July 1992, and My Dying Bride released their debut album As The Flower Withers earlier in May 1992. That leaves us with Anathema's introduction in The Crestfallen on November 1992. How did Anathema's first EP go?

Listening to this again, I'm remembering how much I dig the songs and melodies on it. And Everwake is still stunning.

This is probably my favourite Anathema release from their Death/Doom era.

Better than 'Pentecost III' is my opinion. I feel the Death/Doom genre worked well with Anathema in the early 90's, although now they obviously use different styles. The title track and 'They die' are sure highlights for me.

The two demos seem quite pointless after hearing this EP. Clearly an improvement, but I see here's still room for some more good stuff.

Been revisiting this after ... ages. I mean, it was probably some time back in 1995 when I spinned this EP for the last time. Did not pay much attention to it back at the time. This is probably why I never came back to it earlier than now.
I have to admit that this is a great EP and that I dont quite understand why I have neglected it over all the years.
Everwake indeed is the highlight here, but the title track also stands out. That I was able to recall. But ...And I lust as well as They Die are also pretty good, and that is really news to me today.

I guess it is so good to come back to this just now because this is old Anathema, I mean really old.
Sure, The Silent Enigma--my favourite album of everything-- is also old Anathema, and I have always paid a lot of attention to it. But this EP is even older. And I would say it is as good as Serenades, a fact I was not aware of until today.
I have to say: It is just so good to return to this early Death Doom today.

This is great. Don't overlook this if you call yourself an "Old Anathema fan".

Listening to a load of old stuff as having to re-import a big chunk of my CD collection after an IT disaster; have this on now and I completely stand by this 11 year old comment.
