And just like that, the 'hipster black metal band' become merely the 'hipster band'.

Kinda surprised not to see Black Brick making its way into this one.

I feel ya. However, it's definitely also going to be the worst album cover of the year. XD

Nah, I don't mind. Deafheaven have always loved goofy abstract shit. I thought the OCHL cover was bizarre at first too, but now I love it. I'm sure this one will grow on me the same way.

I believe they said it was an outtake from the OCHL sessions. And if the rest of the album follows the first single for this record, I doubt Black Brick would have fit in well here either. It's all good though. It's one of their best songs and I'm just glad it got released in the first place.

The first single is out! It's good but ugh, different. Lots of strikes and gutters, man. We'll see how the album is!

As a fan of Deafheaven, this was a big letdown. It's not terrible, it definitely has some nice atmospheric guitars, and the structure is almost there, but it went too out there musically and the vocals really don't fit well. I will give them credit for trying to branch out and I appreciate that, but this is definitely the bands equivalent to "Shelter" by Alcest.

It's okay for me, not a metal album but a great shoegaze one. I guess it had to happen sooner or later...
I think the vocals are excellent, though they have missed a good opportunity to combine clean and harsh vocals on a larger scale. It would have worked very well. Maybe next time.

It was everything I wanted. Really proud of them for broadening their sound, but I loved how they went full traditional Deafheaven for the last half of Mombasa and closed out the record. I thought George's singing on this record was fantastic and the fact that he sparsely used his harsh vocals made them that much more powerful when he did. No complaints here.

Album of the year. 10/10

Emotional and fantastic musically. The emphasis on certain lyrics are purposeful. This is a work of art and your can hear the effort they put into it.

I definitely agree but it's not that full Deafheaven sound. For a shoegaze album, it's pretty good. For a Deafheaven album, it's pretty weak.

As for ickoriss, well, he's ugh, being a Fan-Dude, man. Definitely not album of the year - certainly not on *metal*storm.

So what you're saying is that the album is bad because it's not metal?

I'd say it's, not bad, but not great, because it's not metal in a not particularly interesting way. As the internet's busiest music nerd said, "it's crescendocore 101... it makes me feel like I'm sitting at the end of a third wave post-rock human centipede"; it's perfectly competent and pretty good in some places, but also quite unremarkable

There is some irony in you quoting me quoting someone about how it's "fantastic musically" and then Cathy Newmaning me with me saying it's bad. That's not what I said, nor was it implied. I said for a shoegaze album it's pretty good - it doesn't necessarily stand out though. And for a Deafheaven album, it's weak - it doesn't have that sound that really makes it amazing.

Plenty of great albums which are not metal, sir... man.

The irony is not lost on me, my dude

It's weird that you're saying that it's a good shoegaze album and a weak Deafheaven album. Is Deafheaven better than the entire shoegaze sound? If it's a "pretty good shoegaze album", why did you rate it a 5, which is a "not good" in our rating tags?

Hey, dont wanna give you a hard time about what you rate and what you think of it, I'm just messing around. It's not my fav Deafheaven either

I'd say most great albums are not metal

I gave it a five because I don't like the album as a Deafheaven piece. A bit more of the intensity and uniqueness that makes Deafheaven's sound would have been great.

Now I'm curious what live shows will be like...

Maybe the lead singer will maintain his head facing down and gaze at his shoes the whole time?

Nah, Radu. I think what the dude here is saying is the following: The album is good in itself. But what made Deafheaven stand out as a band is gone in this album. That is how I read it.

They worst and shitiest album, I call those suxer as someone called Waldo in one Video, Even it has soem 80's vibes, I prefer much more 80's gothic bands as Systers of mercy, Fields of Nefelim, Clan of Xomox , The Cure and such ones, much better, but well

From the singles I was expecting AOTY material. Its not, its not a bad album of course, but its inferior to Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, which was a beast of an album. Dont care about the softer side at all (the singles were absolutely awesome), but the whole album lacks maybe some cohesion.

Average even for a shoegaze album. If you want to listen to pure shoegaze check out bands like My Bloody Valentine and leave this well alone.

The great songwriting helped me like this album. In blue is such a good song. I really do hope that they go back to their metal roots in the next album.
