At first I was regretting not getting the 08/09 reissue with more versions of the same songs, but the only thing I love about this album is the title track - about the only hard rock on here. Almost all of the other 10ish DP albums I've heard are far better IMO. Haven't listened to it since around the time I got it as it's so soft compared to the others... wonder if I could boost it up one or two points...

I love this album; surely it's not as good as Burn, but still very enjoyable.
The weaker tracks are the 2 Hughes numbers You can't do it right and Love don't mean a thing; still listenable though, they're not bad at all.

I agree with you sir. Although those tracks might be more boring, I still feel Glenn was a better singer than David back then, but David improved immensely in those early years of Whitesnake.

Glenn is still way better than David (even though I do like David) just check out his work on Black Country Communion and especially the BCC live dvd that was released this year. Glenn is totally the voice of rock.

Well, I'm still a bit inclined to vote for David, simply because of the evolution and my love for 70's Whitesnake. Though my grades for 80's Whitesnake are way higher simply because those are coherent albums and are probably one of the more decent things glam metal left behind... the older albums just had good songs that shined but nothing special in the rest.

Whitesnake have never been glam metal. They might have looked glam with the hair, but then again so did most thrash bands in the 80s, but their music had nothing to do with it at all.

If Whitesnake weren't glam then what were they? I've always thought of them as a hard rock/glam band.

That was my stance for many years, but my friends just kept telling me that's not true and that I just don't want them to be glam as I like them and I don't like glam I revisited my attitude later on; their radio hits sound pretty glamish to me.

I don't care for them or the genre anyway so it doesn't matter to me what people think. I'll still refer to them as a glam band.

Well, glad to see my old stance is not just my own refusal to have anything involved with the glam scene (although I picked up a couple of nice albums in the style afterwards) but actually someone else's opinion as well But you must agree that, even if it sounded too firmly rooted in the older Whitesnake sound, their look and videos showed a deliberate desire to go in the general direction of those trends.

Like I said their look ws even found in thrash metal at the time, it was your general 80s look at the time. And those videos were garnered at MTV airplay but then again so were Iron Maiden's videos.

Well, there was certainly a difference between Dave Mustaine's look and videos and David Coverdale's look and videos back in the day

Well hair isn't everything I'll just cut the spam now, this is a Deep Purple album after all, but it's interesting how you're the second dude around "correcting" my opinions of fashion today, and the last time I surveyed people, 90% of males I know couldn't explain the difference between a skirt and a dress in less than 15 words (and some of them can't tell it at all)

[rant about DP not being glam]

edit: shit, why are you people even discussing Whitesnake on a Deep Purple thread? Troy, please ignore this rambling post , though to be honest even Whitesnake aren't glam (except of course for Here I Go Again), their 70s stuff was actually quite similar to DP without keyboards.

that is a completely false and ignorant statement. I know you're a reviewer though so for historical purposes, DP were not and are not a glam band. I'm not entirely sure how you can even compare DP (who are extremely heavily influenced by jazz and blues) with glam. would a glam band ever write a 10 minute war epic or a 6 minute song in 6/8 beat about being lost in the mountains, which contains a goddam bass solo?

if DP were glam rock, then it suffices to say that Judas Priest were glam rock, and probably Rainbow and Maiden too. hell, at least Priest and Maiden still retain some of their 80s image, so aside from the fact they had similar musical styles back in the 70s/80s, similar image and lyrics, so would you call them glam too?

He wasn't talking about DP but about Whitesnake, who are wrongly labeled as glam by quite a few people.

I never said anything about albums, but that song is a glam rock staple, let's face it.

Much more a Hughes & Coverdale album than a DP album. It contains good tracks like "Stormbringer", and lyrically it isn't their most successful record, what the heck is a Stormbringer??! Most of the album is love related, which it doesn't have to be bad, but in this case it isn't a typical good album for DP. It also set the departure of Blackmore of the band and the disband of the band two years later. For me it's in the top 5 worst albums of DP being one of the most different in their discography.

Once again this is an example of an album being overshadowed by its predecessor, and in this case, 'Burn' was certainly one of DP's better and more memorable albums. This isn't to say that 'Stormbringer' isn't a good album, because it is, despite Coverdale's vocals being slightly off-putting at times. Most of the songs on this album seem to resemble Whitesnake's earlier material, and it's no surprise that Deep Purple and Whitesnake songs often get mistaken for one another. Despite the monotonous 'Holy man' and too-funky-for-its-own-good 'Love don't mean a thing', 'Stormbringer' is another example of Deep Purple delivering the goods without Gillain.

what's a "Technical Ecstasy moment"? Is it a band creating music in a tension atmosphere? Both albums have that, that is the only resemblance between the two albums. I doubt you are thinking of that. Are you saying both albums are average (your 6 rating made me think of this)? I disagree.

I am very fond of this album, I've been listening to it since '93 and I'm still having fun listening to it.
Despite the tension in the band, cause obviously by the ever domineering personality of Blackmore (who leaves the band for the first time soon after), there is some great songwriting on this album IMO.
