"We feel it is our most personal record to date. Low-key, dark, and tragic. As we are."

This sentence was the last part in the news update on Ulver's official website just before this album was released. Theese words, particulary "Low-key, dark, and tragic" reflect the atmosphere of this album very well. I would say this album is probably Ulver's best effort so far, and also one of the best atmospheric albums you could find - probably even one of the best albums ever released. And it's all about atmosphere. If 'Blood Inside' made me think of cities and dark factories, 'Shadows Of The Sun' works in the exact opposite way. When I listen to this album I see deserts, moors and other kinds of fields. It all takes place in the very night, and on the sky there is a full moon. And under the moon, wolves gather - just like mentioned in the opening track. This haunting atmosphere is created by a unique combination of instruments like trumpet, strings and theremin, the totally original song structures, one of the best productions I've ever heard - and of course the awesome lyrics and enchanting vocals.

This album is hauntingly beautiful, the best album for me to relax and calmly drive home to after having an exhausting day. It's also soothing to sleep to. One of my favorites from Ulver for sure!

Preparing myself for Messe by listening to this timeless classic and possibly watching their DVD later.

Timeless classic? It's not even 6 years old.

It still sounds excellent, and I've been listening to this a lot since the release. So test of time timeless, you know. Let's not talk about time, and how timeless is just a.... okey?

But the term "classic" should be reserved for albums (or whatever) that are both old and universally lauded. Modern classic would be an acceptable variation of that, but to be honest I would hardly say that this record is a classic. Quite a few Ulver fans find it to be quite the bore, so certainly not a universally accepted album. To call an album that you personally like a "timeless classic" is a tad arrogant if you ask me

Classic for me. For my brain. Not giving classic stamps and offering it as a 'staff pick' as a 'classic'. That's different. "Quite a few", I don't give a fuck

But yeah, I think you are having fun too, while replying. I hope you get my view, though.

I'm sure you told me that you were into metal when you were very young, mid 90's or thereabouts. I don't really see how an album as young as this could fall under the "classic" rubric. Any definition of the word tends not to fit, unless you're changing the meaning to suit yourself of course.

I think the term classic should be strictly reserved for objective judgements of quality. Hell, it's one of the few buzzwords that actually relate to it. (Hence my defensiveness over its use).

Well, it's the same way I felt about albums such as Paradise Lost - Icon, etc.

Once you truly resonate with something, it swallows you. And whenever you visit that state, you shall drown in comfort.

And it's personal classic. Not talking about the effect it managed to create, and so, what's the classic you're talking about.

I also didn't write down the word 'personal' 'cause it's quite the same thing as writing "in my opinion" every time.

As per my comment above yours, for me the use of a term such as "personal classic" is something of an oxymoron, as classic is something is something that comes in to being when considered by a mass of people (to be great), therefore transcending the personal (the subjective).

I think everyone is taking this WAAY too far. So what if one person happens to love this record, we don't need to go into this frivolous debate about "what makes an album 'classic'". Let's just leave it to a matter of personal opinion and let by-gones be by-gones. Anyway, I think this album's awesome.

Call it a modern classic in about 5 years time and the retorts should be minimal ( assuming it's a stupendous album)

Quite far from being stupendous. Stupendously average perhaps.

This is such a delicate album. Dark but in a very inviting way. Like being enveloped in black velvet while watching the stars. The production and keys are on point.
