Axl's terribly offensive lyrics on "One in a Million" ruined this album for me. From all accounts he fought tooth and nail to get it on the album but saner heads should have prevailed. They ought not to have catered to someone who was clearly mentally disturbed and possibly mentally ill.

It wasn't meant to be taken seriously. I always thought the lyrics were a hyperbole.

From what I've read, Axl was xenophobic, homophobic and racist, so I think his lyrics were a true reflection of his feelings.

Like Ace Frawley said... Axl is-was a xenophobic, homophobic racist. So yeah the lyrics were serious.

And then in the 3rd verse he calls other people intolerant, so clearly he can't be taken seriously. Like those people on the radio and newspapers (Andrew Bolt, for example).

The real mystery regarding the lyrics of "One in a Million" is what the chorus has to do with the rest of the song.

It's funny how people listen to bands with lyrical themes such as death, rape and suicide and then when there's a sentence like "I don't like people belonging to this particular set of people", it suddenly is "offensive"

Too true!

A lot of G N R lyrics were bizarre at best.

GnR has best lyrics in Hard rock category IMO

I understand what they tried to say with the song, but the concept would have worked without these awful lyrics. There is no need to say the n-word or f**got, and you can get your point across anyway.

What's baffleing me is that Slash was okay with this. As far as I know, he was always progressive and smart, the complete opposite of Axl.

Btw., talking about explicit topics like murder and rape isn't as offensive as normalising hate like GnR are doing with "One in a Million".

As far as I understand, Axl grew up in a rural area, where he wasn't exposed to different ideas and to the melting pot that big cities are. When he first came to LA, this is basically his experience he's talking about, and he is talking about the cultural shock he felt.
The text is just horrible, and not okay. It always baffles me how people can't handle such a thing as multi-culturalism, which is basically the foundation of America.

Axl was never racist nor homophobic. The song was written as a representation of what he left in Indiana. How the small town that he grew up in thought. It wasnt suppose to be taken literally. He talked about the song in an interview. Its was about the world he escaped versus the world he lives in now. Its an incredibly deep song. Two of Axls biggest influences were gay in Freddy Mercury & Elton John. He was also always socially aware. People just didnt understand this particular song.
