Good album, a rawer form of the Deftones.
Wish I could give it a 7.5, but not quite an 8

So full of angsty hatred, Deftones' debut rarely disappoints me.

The lyrics on this album are wonderful because they are thought provoking, interesting, and emotional while still being completely metal.

How is a lyric "metal"?

I'd like to know that answer for myself to be honest. Some people criticize emo bands for being melodramatic, meanwhile a lot of doom metal bands employ the same lyric style and are praised for it.

I suppose a metal lyric would be something like "praise metal" or "raise the horns" or whatever. Something more or less strictly related to metal. Kind of like how some rock bands sing about rock'n'roll.

This is such a unique and under-rated release in their catalog. I have bought every album since this one. I listened to it the other day thinking it would just be for a lark. I was so wrong. The atmosphere on this album is so dark and gritty, and the songs hold up. It has 90's written all over it. People ragged on them for "trying to be like Korn," but this is far more Godflesh and Helmut than Korn.

A Nice Guy
First time listening to this debut in full and I have to say it's very impressive, I'm not really sure how to describe it, other than it sounds really good, I really like the guitar tone, and the bass especially, the vocals are pretty good too. It's a consistent album, with lot's of good tracks, "Lifter", "Root", "Birthmark", and "Fireal" are the highlights for me.

The downside is that after listening to the album as a whole several times, some of the tracks do start to sound the same, and it eventually starts to sound a wee bit one dimensional after a few spins, but it's still a solid record all round.
