Well, before you read this review, just forget all you know about black metal! Forget all those modern black metal bands, forget all those awesome symphonies and forget even the epic viking albums of Bathory. For all the young metallers that don't know much about the history of black metal and listen often to Cradle Of Filth, this album (maybe) will sound like the worst thing ever made, but there is much history behind this release and all of Bathory, that I will explain. Now we will see what black metal was before... before...

This album certainly had a huge influence on black metal to the point that many would even consider it the very first true black metal album - I certainly would - and that album cover has become one of the most iconic covers in black metal history; a simple satanic logo that had huge effect on creating the black metal genre.

Only one word i can say for this album...timeless. Production is not the best, but id like to see anyone else try and do as good a job as quorthon did with this album. Fucking awesome debut\m/

Awesome debut is correct. So raw, so dirty. It's like early Venom albums, except slightly more extreme

Wow, so "Necromansy" and the Burzum song, "War"......Can that be considered a "rip off" or did Varg get Quorthon's permission?

Well, for me this single album is better than all venom discography I also noticed the similarity of these two songs, but I think it's just coincidence.

Actually, it can be considered a rip-off. Varg recorded War for us to remember Bathory legendary debut.

I mean, who'll ever forget this album? :lol It's amongst my favourite thrash/speedy metal album ever, if not, my favourite.

To be honest if band would play like this all time it would not ne as good and reach its glory as it is today
Bathery as I know and all know(yes i did know band before played speedy, thasrhy sound of metal) is more epic, more 8min somgs
This album is not week but not super good, maybe most overated from early 80's from Swedish bands, but it has some meaning also, what turns it as kult icon to worship

Legendary Sweden Band named Bathory made this awesome album. The Bad of this album is just about quality! .Like a Venom, but many Black metal fans agreed about this album is first black metal album because of the instrument is little diffrent than Venom, and more wicked

all 1th vave of BM bands even true BM early albums was lack of quality . I am proud you understand
''trOO'' metal warriors like such lack quality albums, they call ''TrOO'' I say its shit

For anyone interested. Osmose Productions is selling bootleg versions of this album along with The Return and Under The Sign. If you can order those albums, do it because they are the definitive versions of those three.

A Nice Guy
This album certainly had a huge influence on the early black metal scence, and the wave that started in the early 90s in Norway. Bathory had created a music style of his own with a more raw production, simple repetitive riffs, more satanic songwriting, and harsher vocals, it was still thrash metal, but not in the same way as Venom, it was even more blackened. Eventually this type of metal had evolved into the black metal we know today.

It's an album I enjoy listening to now and again, but the songs kind of sound a bit too similar imo, and the production is quite bad tbh, I dont mind the raw sound tho. He certainly improved on both production and songwriting in his later albums over time.

The low quality gave this album a special touch, the guitar riffs benefited greatly, even if sometimes the quality was exaggeratedly bad. Favorite tracks are Hades, Reaper, Necromansy and Raise the Dead.
