Listening to this album right now. It's interesting why the band is not tagged with the Sludge or Doom tag. Those genres are quite vividly pronounced here, and I would not call this very avantgarde or alternative.

I cannot get into early Neurosis at all. It's funny cause they are credited as one of the founders of the post-metal genre - my favorite genre.

Hmmm I think this might actually be better than Through Silver in Blood, But its close. "Away" may actually be my favourite Neurosis song so far.

The tag was used back then because by the time it was released avantgarde was just a name for bands being unique and inventive, it didn't really mean anything else... and Neurosis were definitely those things at the time. It was a name that simply got stuck. Nowdays it's just Post-metal. Although I definitely understand why they were called alternative back in the 90s.

I'm the other way around. While I enjoy many bands of the genre... If I'm listening to some other post-metal band, I tend to switch to Neurosis sooner or later... Or if I'm already listening to Neurosis then I don't switch to anything else of that genre... Either the songwriting of the others isn't impressive enough, not enough atmosphere, the vocals lack the same punch or the music is simply not as well executed.

Opinions, they are interesting!

TSIB still wins for me just for one reason only:
Times of Grace's first track isn't "Through Silver In Blood"...

I like it more than TSIB although they are both nuts. "End of the Harvest" is so fucking crushing.

I think that might be because this was post metal in the early stages when it was more so just an atmospheric brand of sludge, and the heavy post rock influence that the style is mostly known for now wasn't there as much. I prefer "post" bands of the former style, more like this, but you seem to prefer the latter

I think this one is good, but not quite as good as the three before it. The first half is strong but I'm not too fond of Away and I don't think the title track is as good as previous albums'. The Tribes Of Neurot/Neurosis album mashup adds some rather interesting things, although I'm not entirely convinced by all of it.

Edit: Stop talking bullshit man. As always, repeated exposure reveals the greatness of Neurosis. Under The Surface is amazing

'Away' reminds me a lot of Swans.
