In the last few years, the metal community saw many dead bands rising from their ashes, playing some festivals, and eventually recording new albums. Even the technical/jazz death metal scene was swept in the movement, so after Cynic, then Pestilence, here we are finally with the new Atheist album.
Even if there wasn't supposed to be one at first.

Let's face it. It isn't exactly the easiest task for a band with a legendary discography that hasn't been built upon in a considerably long period of time to suddenly rise from the ashes with a new album, and Atheist no doubt knew that they were facing this challenge with Jupiter. In such a case, a band really only has two choices. They can either continue with their classic sound that won them such love and admiration from their fanbase, or they can go for a newer sound that, while different, is still a refreshingly original and interesting evolution (see Bathory and Cynic). Unfortunately, however, on Jupiter, Atheist's new sound, coming 17 years after Elements, sounds much more like a regression than an evolution.

Listen to Xerath's cover of YYZ, excellent stuff.

Rating: 6 Heard it twice now and really enjoy it. Kelly's vocals are a bit rougher than before, but musically it's as strong as ever.

I know this is a rather shallow question (because I'm going to find out eventually and make up my own mind), but how does it compare to the other Atheist albums? Do the musical arrangements themselves stand up against their own technical work? I'm excited, so that's why I'm asking.

I definitely think it does. Other than having a more aggressive sound (the Jason Suecof treatment) it's very much in line with old Atheist stuff. The songwriting is still just as killer, and the licks and riffs just as badass.

  Holy fuck, I'm excited.

Visioneerie - 02.11.2010 at 07:35
Might as well be the first metal album I check as a whole in a while. Hopefully it will be time well spent.

I seldom like tech death, but this one is great!
-Brutal
-Memorable melodies
-Technical
-Time Changes w/o souding just for the sake of it
-Audible bass
Introspekrieg - 09.11.2010 at 02:47
Reminds me of Elements on the first listen... vocals a bit more pronounced and distracting but other than the shortness of the album it seems very redeeming. Masters of jazz metal have a nice comeback by the sound of it... looking forward to further listening.

Rating: 8 What a good suprisei i didn't expect that! It's a perfect come back according to myself. They didn't try to copy piece of time or another old stuff. But they kept the jazzy feeling with more metal parts.

Want this albulm soo hard Cheers
musicalkaratekid - 19.05.2012 at 02:03
Rating: 9 An excellent comeback, and one that has certainly stood the test of time too. The band haven't lost the edge that was displayed on 'Elements', and they even manage to keep the right length. I actually prefer this to 'Elements', but it seems 'Jupiter' is the most underrated Atheist album.
deadone - 17.07.2014 at 03:08
Rating: 7 I have the ultimate love-hate relationship with this album

I listened to this again last night and really enjoyed it. Time before I listened to it, it grated like hell.

I think it's one of those "you have to be in the mood" type albums.

It could be last night was just wierd as I absolutely also loved listening to Divine Heresy "Bleed The Fifth, an album I usually find somewhat average.
