Anyway, I've just listened to Faster, and quite enjoy it indeed. A bit more modern rock style, I hope this album will turn out acceptable.

My opinion is that you shouldn't judge the band by it's cover...ppl change, they grow like everything else on this planet and the same happens with bands they change, they grow and especially they change because of the ppl meaning the fans or just the ppl who listen to their music...commercial they've become because you know them and what's so wrong with changes, even if the changes are good or bad you should appreciate one thing that the band still exists and still makes music for their fans. I don't know, but me, i just don't wanna judge anyone until i know for sure that what i see or what i'm listening to is really good even if its changed into a commercial song or album. \m/

It's softer, but it's still Within Temptation. nice vocals, nice melody. I think, it's not bad as Tristanias 'Rubicon'...

No, it is much worse than Rubicon! Complete Lacuna Coil syndrome. Though I must mention that I adore Rubicon, so after first to listens The Unforgivenn is not so bad, but it is absolute change of events. If I have to judge the album as a an evolution of WT than I would rate it 6, but if a separate album, not connected to band's previous works, I would probably give it an 8 (Though the lyrics are truly awful).

Play dot com in the UK have a stream of the full album running. Will need to set a proxy server to hear it but that's not too difficult with Google.
I was really worried about this whole comic tie in thing, but am glad to say my worries were unfounded. When I had a listen yesterday I was instantly hooked and, IMO, I think you are looking at their best album so far.

This is not metal anymore, not even rock really.
But I like what I have heard so far, it is not as bad as THOE, which I didn't like much as she was trying to sound like Avril Latrine. Far closer to TSF, my fav WT album.
Wasn't expecting to get this, but am tempted now. Think I may be turning in to a girl.

Haha, don't be so embarrassed.
"The Unforgiving" sort of met my expectations (being all "modern Pop-rock" and commercial) but honestly, I expected it to be worse. For the time being, I've only liked 2-3 songs on it and I definitely prefer "The Heart Of Everything" but I'll give the new album a few other tries and we shall see.
I found some of the orchestrations and choir parts on "The Unforgiving" pretty good. In addition, Sharon's voice slays! (As it usually does.) I'm not quite sure if this new record reminds me of "The Silent Force" (which also is my favourite WT album) and I don't think so, either, but it may have some elements from it...
P.S.: Weak lyrics indeed.

well, actually this album combines Pop-rock, with alternative rock and a bit of symphonic metal(being the least), I mean that every song has a different style....Still the album is very beautiful imo, and I was expecting the worst for it, but like you, Now Im not..!!

Well, it is definitely miles from "tr00 metul" (and in fact it is cheesy, poppish and mainstream as hell) -- but that does not make it bad, if you want to hear my two eurocents.
Anyone who thought a new WT album (a comic-based concept album, mind you!) would be like their Gothic roots and Dance is very naïve (or blind and totally stupid) indeed...
The bottom line? Poppish symphonic rock for those days when you don't feel like listening to brutal death, black, doom or prog and want to enjoy some straightforward music and well-delivered female vocals.

Just got it delivered, three tracks in and I'm definitely a man now.
Better than the samples sounded. Can understand why people don't like it, as it has gone radio friendly. But I don't care as it still sounds great. I know how much you like the previous album, but this is a return to form for me.

Such a shame...I miss the first album(their best by far) where they were pure metal. After that album they have always been somewhere between rock and metal, but I'm sad to see that they have now taken the step into rock/pop. This album may be what kills my interest in this band.

When i first listened to "What Have You Done" from "The Heart of Everything", i thought, "ok, i hope they don't turn this way"...and they did!
Even The Slent Force (btw my favourite WT album) and The Heart of Everything had strong choruses, a lot of keys, orquestral sections, and both were already modern gothic metal albums in opposite to the symphonic gothic metal of their early albums.
But on this one they managed to remove absolutely EVERYTHING i loved on them:
-Dynamic vocals, not the growls, but all the amazing varied parts Sharon did. Now it's just that strong and boring tune.
-Heaviness and orquestrations. They now sound modern rock with ocasional d-tuned guitars adding false weight to the songs.
-Great and strong drumming. I dunno if that's why their last drummer quit, but the drumming on this album is so boring and crappy, it hurts.
Ah! And "Faster" vaguely reminds "Wicked Games" from Chris Isaak. Not the pre-chorus (the repeated "faster, faster"), of course, but the rest of song.
This modern rock crap just isn't for me, plus it comes from a band that i used to love. Another sell out.

Actually, you may find it even more similar to HIM's cover -it's almost like WT was "inspired" by this version of the song

Just listening through the album, I also noticed that Chris Isaak's song, which more goes with the lines of the version by HIM (and his infernal majesty marked it as a cover like a respectable band does).

Nailed it.
Yeah, it's commercial and radio-friendly, but weren't they upfront about that? Who's surprised, really? From the beginning they said, "This is going to have '80s influences." Honestly, I was only a casual WT fan at best - I like a handful of songs from THoE, think TSF is boring as hell, and still need to listen to ME (though I like what I've heard from it so far) - but I love this, and I really wasn't expecting to. The choruses are strong, and Sharon sounds fantastic. My only problem is that the album seems to lose steam after the first half. Still, I will definitely be picking this up.
