If you ever wondered what a Power Metal band such as Virgin Steele would sound like trying to mystify and/or darken their sound, you will enjoy The Black Light Bacchanalia. The latest oeuvre from the New York legends takes several spins to sink in, which is definitely a good indication in my book. The first listen left me disappointed though, almost puzzled by the whole thing. And I am slowly starting to grasp the strengths and shortcomings of the album.

This album gets better and better with each listen. It just needs a few more faster tracks to spice things up.

Some classic worthy songs on this album (#1, #7 and #10), but is it necessary to have this album to last 75+ mins? I say not, I say skip button is needed.

I really hated this album for a long time, apart from the obvious highlights (Hammer of Zeus, Crown them With Halos and Necropolis) the rest was trash in my book. But time can really change things. I don't think it's that good of a album but I think there's good stuff in all the songs and the production is crisp. The biggest problem is David Defeis vocals and the fact that this contain maybe 50 minutes of greatness and the rest is just pure filler stuff. It's in the same ballpark as Visions of Eden when it comes to the overall rating. Not bad but a far step from the band that recorded Let it Roar, Life among the Ruins and Kingdom of the Fearless.

If you decide to get this one, then pick up the two cd version as it has two decent bonus tracks.
And what do you call assassins who accuse assassins anyway, my friend?
