Portugal has its own dynamics in the atmospheric gothic/doom metal scene, of course every band affiliates more with some of the aforementioned characteristics and I don't place every one of them in the same generic category. To be more precise, Ava Inferi move towards a gothic metal destination while they infuse a doom-driven vibe within their compositions.

There's already an album titled Onyx.

This was a disappointment. I like the first two tracks and The Heathen Island, but the rest is too derivative, hollow and stripped of emotion. I prefer the previous album Blood of Bachus.

Yea the opening track and Majesty, has a Blood of Bacchus tinge to it, seems like they don't veer too far away from their sound after 2 years or whatever. Good choice with Majesty though

I'm loving the album, is very atmospheric and has great melodies and melancholy shares.

Great attention to the beautiful voice of Carmen Simoes and the composition of Rune Eriksen.

I don't understand how bands like Amaranthe have a greater rating than Ava Inferi. This is music!

Wow, this is good album, I like it. Way better than previous one, which had annoyng & mediocre vocals (at least this time the solist doesn't try to sing notes, she can't).
My favourite one is "Venice In Fog"...

This album is my first experience with Ava Inferi so I can't compare it to their previous releases but what a fantastic album it is!

Right from the start I felt that it was going to be something special. All the songs are captivating in one way or another with varied melodies and vocal approaches by Carmen. The album manages to be dark, cold and beautiful at the same.

It is an enjoyable addition to the otherwise stagnant female fronted gothic metal scene of today and I'm really curious to see what the band will come up with next.

^Thanks!

Agalloch also sampled quotes from the same movie on their White EP. And for the record, the remake made me want to burn alive in a giant wicker cage.

I don't see any thing special with this.i love the genre, gothic doom is my favorite genre but their music is very boring with boring and repetitive female vocals.
nothing with Portugal's and making good gothic music.it reminds me of moonspell.

I think I might prefer Blood of Bacchus, but I love the way Carmen sings in some of the songs here. Not to say the music itself is bad at all.

I can't believe that i finally was able to enjoy this witch singing, somehow i find the ridiculous witch shrieks of the previous albums absent and she seems to have accepted that her vocals are just average and thus use them without trying to hit notes she can't, if they continue with this sound perhaps their coming albums will be enjoyable to me.. my highlights heathen land, venice in fog, the living end

I agree somewhat there (not about the witch thing, or about her being average ) she sounds much more comfortable here than on previous albums. Seems to have found a better way to fully express her voice. I think it might be the denser atmosphere that makes her sound more at home.

And something about this album just pulls me in time and time again. Once I start listening there's no stopping it.

haha,oh come on, she does witch vocals at some point with her laughs, plus the fact that their lyrics are so nature oriented in a pagan-wicca kind of way. yeah, true, the atmosphere is present for once and its enjoyable

Maybe I'm just under the witch's spell Can't say the lyrics struck me as "pagan" or "wicca", they have something to say about nature but that's not uncommon in metal I think.
