Primordial is one of those bands that don't have to change their sound. It was this heart-felt marriage of epic grandeur and bitterness that granted them the distinctive sound they possess throughout the years. As a result many people got to cherish their work and dive into a maelstrom of intensity and emotions. You don't have to expect progress and they don't have to prove anything. What really matters in this specific case is everything Primordial have to say and the way they express it through their music. It's all about spirit and sound dynamics and by dynamics I mean the way the spirit comes into a sound life form of existence making the listener get closer to it. Of course I don't mean that I wouldn't like to hear progress from them, it would be interesting to see how it works to say the least, but this is Primordial, just like Iron Maiden is Iron Maiden, as simple as that.

Primordial vocalist A.A. Nemtheanga comments on the new album:

"If I had to sum this album up I would say this is the 'death' album. Plain and simple. There isn't exactly a whole concept but many of the themes deal with mortality, how we deal with it. The spiritual structures we place around us to make sense of it. Sex, death, procreation and god. As we get older our relationship to our lives changes, the realization you will not live forever, the grand plan you hoped to uncover never materializes, food for worms and nothing more. We are animals, beasts and making peace with that beast might be your life's work but more often than not he is never tamed.

"Once a wolf always a wolf. We all seek redemption in one way or another, from lies or from truth. Those of us who are godless or faithless often envy the man of faith for his life seems to have an extra purpose, despite the fact that logic, pragmatism, science and realism should crush any sign of faith, we still persist in lying to ourselves. Perhaps the alternative is too much to bear. So the themes of religion, mortality and death occur over and over again, along with continuing themes of alienation, martyrdom, sacrifice, violence and retribution. Occasionally, very occasionally a chink of light breaks through. This is our seventh album, you know what to expect, passion, intensity, commitment and sheer bloody mindedness. Don't expect fantasy or escapism. No remorse, no regret."

It's a nice record, a fine one perhaps though it wasn't more than a stone's throw away from being a bit boring; there are no 'Gods To The Godless' moments to be found here. Not the sort of the thing that gets me excited these days but I'm sure I'll play it more in the future.

I dig it a lot after a couple spins. not so much as it's predecessor, but i like it more than the other Primordial i have. i'll need to give it a few more spins to deliver a verdict, though... see if i enjoy it more, or if it diminishes a little bit.

Mixed feelings I have about this one. Somehow I feel like the last 3 albums are one big album - they all sound if not same than pretty similar. That means Primordial is copying the same formulae over and over again. It gets boring after some time, but if you pick a couple of songs to listen per day - than it's truly exiting stuff to enjoy. I would like more diversity per album...

I thought this album was quite good instrumentally, but the vocals for the most part were agonizingly painfull... There were some exceptions to this here and there but really the lyrics seemed terrible and the vocal lines did just not fit for me at all. It was as if he had just found somthing to read and improvised singreading it to the music. The result, a boring, uncomfortable and uninspired bunch of words that did nothing but annoy me by relentlessly destroying any vibe that the instrumental parts had created.

I really enjoyed this album. I think that Primordial is one of the very few pagan metal bands who possess their own distinctive sound and it shows on this album. It may not seem too much different from 'To the Nameless Dead" on the first listen but if listen attentively you can find the differences. If you didn't like the previous Primordial albums you won't like this one either but in the other case I suggest you give it a few more spins before forming your opinion of it.

It's a bit disappointing actually. But i'll give it a few more chances, might be a grower.

Edit:

Yes, it is a grower. Give it every chance you can, it's an hell of an album.

Maybe I'll change my mind, but this seems pretty weak. It's considerably less enjoyable than To the Nameless Dead, and I thought that was a bit overrated. Then again, I have such a bias for Empire Falls that everything else pales in comparison. That's just one of my favorite songs in general.

really? I found both they vocals and lyrics to both improved over both To the Nameless Dead and To the Gathering Wilderness.
I can agree however that there is some quality about A.A.'s voice that sometimes feels like it just doesn't fit with the rest of the music. This very fact is my primary grievance with the previous two albums. But as aforementioned this 'issue' seems, at least to this one, to be of a smaller/insignificant magnitude that was present in the past. Finally I would say that at least in my case, disquiet about the vocal style is remedied by multiple, multiple spins.
IMO their best work to date.

Everything he doesn't like is metalcore. Britney Spears, Elton John, Michael Moore, and green beans are also metalcore, in case you guys didn't know.

Yeah I think I might give this album another shot, you're probably right and I just need a few more listens. The only problem will be getting myself to actually bother.

I think a fair amount of people are disappointed with this album because they latched onto the anthemic style of To the Nameless Dead. Let's face it. They weren't making the same album over again. Bands evolve.

This album is brilliant. I can't get enough of it.

Being my first Primordial album, I have been very impressed with what I've heard so far. The music is excellent, with precision in every note. The compositions are quite complex and varied. These guys are obviously very talented and it shows. And not only that, the amount of hard work done on this album is for all to see. Surely one of the best albums of 2011 and I now eagerly go back to their back catalogue.

One of the best Primordial releases so far. Any clues why this band still remains at the outskirts of popularity??

It is largely the vocals on this record that prevented me from rating it any more than I did.

Not a bad LP, but more average than good, I'd maintain.

Far from Primordial's best output, but still has got some killer songs such as the first track and the title track. Lain With The Wolf is an instant classic as well.

I think its some kind a talent band has, no matter how weak album, they can put it good, or better as other bands weaker ones, seems band really loves their job

Cant understand the reluctance here. I'd rather claim "it wasn't more than a stone's throw away from being a" masterpiece. Songs like Lain with the wolf, Death of Gods, and in particular The mouth of judas belong to the band's all-time best. It is not as brilliant as To the nameless dead, but I would put this at least at par with -- and probably slidely higher than -- the Gathering wilderness. Around 9.1 for me.
