Guest review by

1. (Music / Pop Music) a piece of music that is initially unimpressive but becomes more enjoyable after further hearings

After listening to this for half a year I cannot remember a release making such an abrupt 180 degree turn for the better like Altar Of Plagues final album Teethed Glory & Injury. I have dabbled in post-black metal before but my black metal has to be the "light" variety because music tagged with "black" is met with cynicism and hesitation. Alcest and Fen have helped me overcome some of my fears and now Altar Of Plagues can take its place along their side because of consummate use of post-metal guitar textures and arrangements, calm and tranquil yet dark and thick ambient interludes and peerless even flow on a post-metal record.

Rating: 10 OMFG this is incredible.
I've always liked Altar Of Plagues but this album exceeds all my expectations.
MechanisT - 17.04.2013 at 23:46
This is stunning. Damn, it sounds nothing like those "hipster twig metal" acts that are shrooming up every half a second or so. Truly distinctive and grabs your attention right from the get-go. Incredible.
Boxcar Willy - 18.04.2013 at 01:15
Really awesome cover, will have to check this ASAP.

Draugen - 05.05.2013 at 15:22
Rating: 8 I had very low expectations for this album seeing as I consider the bands previous ones to be highly overrated and terribly average. It therefore surprised me greatly when I found it to not only be good but very good in fact. The album feels way more dense and coherent than the other two which in turn made it that much more engaging and emotional. I also enjoyed the bombastic nature of some of the songs and a few of the more intense parts actually remided me of A Forest of Stars which I can't really complain about.

Rating: 10 Listened to this yesterday in its entirety. Not sure if I've heard anything like it. Kind of sounded like a jumbled mess. No structure. At least Mammal has some direction. I suppose I need to give it a few more listens. I can say the production on this album is the best of any of their works.
Skeptic - 07.05.2013 at 03:45
Rating: 9 The atmosphere of this album is really stunning. They did a excellent job mixing the black metal intensity with the "drony" electronic sounds, resulting in a "complex", yet coherent album. Even the unique cover (and videos) are beautiful, fitting the music in a strange and awesome way. A very strong Album of the Year candidate for me.
God Alone - 08.05.2013 at 01:37
Rating: 10 Has anyone already purchased it? I know it might sound stupid but I'm eager to read the lyrics and I wanted to know if there's a booklet... Though judging by some photos I saw it seems there isn't anything like that. It would be really disappointing to buy a copy and discover that I'm not allowed to understand almost any word of what I'm hearing.

Rating: 10 The middle section of this album contains some of best atmospheric/ambient/electronica notes I've ever heard.

Rating: 10 Maybe it's just me, but I've just realized that the cover artwork seems like an inverted fetal position.
Anyway this has quickly become my fav metal album.

Rating: 9 Many people complain about this cover. I honestly don't understand why. Interesting, unusual concept, which perfectly fits to the content. Personally I like better this nice flexible body than another withered tree or a photo of old shack before the renovation

Nnnnnnnope, not getting it. Most certainly not a grower, either. Listened to it twice, three times but nothing sticks. Totally average affair.
R'Vannith - 03.02.2014 at 06:11
I tried it a few times, and I'm in the same boat, nothing really clicked.

Not to tear you apart, but if anything their old albums were lacking in ideas. I love both but their previous albums are pretty run of the mill (even if they are very well put together). The noise adds depth in my opinion as well. To each his own though.
Pierre Tombale - 10.03.2014 at 15:46
Rating: 4 I doubt that would tear me apart. I can agree to disagree.

Almost two years after the release this album keeps growing on me every time i listen it, i think that people cant really see that this is a very special album. Very very good, I love it.
flightoficarus - 08.02.2015 at 05:36
Rating: 9 So late to this group, but the battering ram of Malthusian brought me here. Better late than never. This makes all those dreary, dull groups like Drudkh look like a pile of shit. Best fusion of post metal and black metal I have ever heard.

I love the direction they took on this album. Too bad they split up after releasing such an amazing piece of work; I'd like to hear more black metal in this style. Mechanical, harrowing, and oozing with creativity.

Also, the cover art is fucking perfect.
God Alone - 01.06.2015 at 11:56
Rating: 10 Two years already? ...But it's still one of the most frightening and overwhelming sonic experiences I've ever been through. I doubt its status will change with time.

I'm not sure if I'm giving this a 6 for the music or for seeing Needledrop's face

Rating: 9 I like them all, but this one's indeed the best. The electronic experimentation proved to be a hit.
Roxana.M - 21.07.2016 at 19:22
Rating: 10 I insanely love this masterpiece. it's not just BM (pure) as it has mentioned in MS, but more than that.i mean there is other genres influence; genres like Electronic and Post-Metal.and it's interesting for me that in some parts vocal reminds me of A Forest Of Stars vocal.

the only thing i don't like about the album is the cover and the video they have made for 'God Alone".

Indeed, someone should change the band's tag to Post-Black...

Edit: Nevermind.
