Additional info
Punky Brüster - Cooked on Phonics (a pun of the literacy program Hooked on Phonics) is the debut studio album by Canadian musician Devin Townsend. It is a metal/punk rock parody concept album written by Townsend. Cooked on Phonics tells the story of a fictitious death metal band from south-central Poland called Cryptic Coroner that sells out their metal look and sound to become a commercial punk rock band called Punky Brüster (the band's name is a pun on the 80's U.S. television series Punky Brewster).

A must listen if you liked the humor behind Ziltoid. I laughed my socks off with this one.

Awesome. The first really impressive album by Devin. Nice riffs, vocals, production + tons of humour. Maybe my favourite punk album lol.

This is actually up there with my favorite punk albums. I do love parodies of my favorite genres and Devin totally nailed it.

Those of you who are reading my comment, ignore the rating, ignore everything else. This album is a parody of the pop-punk scene which was all the rave back in the 90s, with bands like Green Day ruling the top charts. Dev did not take this project seriously from a musical point of view. The music here supports the lyrics, which in any other Dev album would've been severely punished, rating-wise. I am not the kind to prefer form over substance and lyrics to me are secondary to music. However, since this album was not meant to be taken serious, I can cut it some slack. Best thing that happened since Spinal Tap. Green Day get mentioned here, as well as other bands from that crap pop-punk scene Sham 41 or Greed Charlotte. There is also a slight allusion made regarding Bad Religion, although their music was not as bad as Green Day's, they did profit from the rise of the pop-punk scene. Further proof that Devin was not serious in recording this? Track 6 which has a very funny spoke part has a riff taken from a Faith No More song "Digging the Grave". There are some very funny bits, most notably the first song i.e. the introduction to the Polish band Cryptic Coroner, and Devin breaking a string and "struggling" to stay in death metal mode. The next dialogue, in song 3, had me in stitches; it shows Cryptic Coroner addressing each other as if they were demons, Orcs or something, but then swiftly morph into high-pitched baby-punk bitches in order to make more money. Song 4 has a hilarious "metal moment"; a bit of a parody of heavy metal clichés this time. In song 8 the band's singer, Doctor Skinny, is embarrassed about his metal roots. In song 9 the band looks forward to becoming "validated" by winning a "Granny Award" in the Lifetime Achievement category despite the fact they'd been playing pop-punk for a mere few weeks. And so on, wonderful stuff like that.

Great tracks: none

Good tracks: none

Average/Crap tracks: all of them. From a musical point of view.

Funniest tracks: 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9.

I suppose a 7 is the average of my rating for the music and my rating for Devin's humour.
