To summarize this review with a single analogy, this album is the musical equivalent of a Ming vase. Under pressure, it is highly fragile and can be shattered with relative ease. Yet if listeners handle it with delicacy, they may just find ripe beauty in its design, and in the clear effort that went into crafting it.

Have you seen their last two EP's? This is par for the course at this point.

The EP titles were ok. But this is just plain weird in a bad way. One of THE worst titles for the next year.

Rating: 9 I'll be honest, I never really cared about titles and artwork. Some of my favourite albums of all time have shitty art and titles.

It's very rare that these things will play any factor in the music, which is what really matters... so why is everyone arguing over this?

Aye.

Prolly, one and only album Cynic is famous for.

As far as I'm aware, Traced in Air was received with moderate levels of praise upon its release. In fact, Evolutionary Sleeper and Integral Birth were pretty hard to escape from in 2008, if I recall correctly. Yes, there was a lot of criticism given to the album as well, but I think it's still an album Cynic are famous for creating.

As for someone else's claim that Focus is the only way to get into Cynic... Traced in Air is certainly a more accessible beginning and features many of the familiar features that made Cynic famous with Focus in the first place. Imo, it would certainly be the right first album for those coming from a modern progressive rock or a non metal-based background, as the vocoder can sometimes be a turnoff to the uninitiated. To see Cynic in their full brilliance, you definitely need to hear Focus, but a good deal of people would probably appreciate it more if they had some familiarity with Traced in Air (simply because it's more consistently mellow).

Rating: 4 Gave it a couple of listens, I don't know what to think. I'm pretty confused.

EDIT: heard it again, and found it a complete waste of time. A couple of decent/nice moments drowned in a sea of random notes. I don't even want to call it "progressive". Blah.
Diverge - 04.02.2014 at 05:22
Rating: 8 Better than I thought it would be.
I don't miss the harsh vocals at all here; it sounds like Cynic throughout the album, and frankly that's good enough for me.

Rating: 6 I actually enjoyed this work. Not sure if its going to be Album of the Year (considering Agalloch and Triptykon have new albums coming out, which will probably blow this one out of the water), but still good.
Lethrokai - 11.02.2014 at 19:32
Rating: 9 This is obviously gonna be an album that will divide opinions, ESPECIALLY here on MS.

However, me personally... I'm loving this. It's nice to hear a prog album that is actually progressive for once.

This will almost definitely be on my top albums list for the year. It might even be Cynic's best work yet, it's THAT good!

Nah, I'm just teasing ya. I seriously love this album, but I can understand why people here feel the way they do. Once again Cynic has tried to do something rather different (but still keeping their own sound) and once again it is REALLY gonna cause a wave of different opinions on this album. Overall however, I think that it's got a beautiful sound to it, and is possibly even Cynic's best to date!

Like bad Cynic? Like progressive metal with shitty vocals? I never said it's not original, I said it's not THAT original. Seems like some think it's mindblowing in originality. And hey, maybe it is to them. But to me it certainly wasn't something which made me think "whoa, what's this?".

Please enlighten me. I don't see anyone here or on the Internet that have claimed that this is incredibly original.

You're right, bad choice of words from me. What I should have said is that I don't think this album is gonna divide MS because Cynic "has tried to do something different". It will divide MS because some of us will think it's just a bad metal album overall.

Well, I might add that this album probably fits better in the category of Progresive Rock than Progressive Metal

Anyway, I still have mixed feelings about it. A few more spins should fix it!

Well that's understandable, seeing as this is hardly a metal album. If anything, I'd say this goes under something along the lines of "progressive space-jazz rock." That's the closest description I have at least... Definitely not much of an album for those who were attracted to the "metal" side of Cynic.

Rating: 8 Sometimes it is hard to understand who is "average member" of Metalstorm. Yeah, album is confusing and takes time to get in. And Traced in Air and Focus were better (I even like Carbon Based anatomy very much). But some kind of real bullshit like Ayreon is applauded by almost every single MS user while Cynic is not .

And criticism that this album is not metal also seems weird since aforementioned Ayreon and tons of other bands listed on MS are 1000x less metal than Cynic s new album.
Cynic Metalhead - 20.02.2014 at 14:36
Rating: 6 Finally I got the record to play on.

Well, it was terribly average album with "great" moments. Aforementioned, bass. I really liked the bossy bass sounds. It had some good moments with guitars which created a good atmosphere of song( Infinite Shapes) but nothing compared to "Focus". They lose the plot and flow in middle section and ending was just drab. Yeah, it was like listening to "Carbon-Based..." all over again.

Good album ruined by lack of energy. They could have done much better in a span of 3 years considering how talented Cynic's musicians are.

From what I've gathered the criticism is directed at the actual quality of the music, not the style its played in. Generally fans of prog don't take issue with the metal vs non-metal debate which is more common amongst fans of extreme metal, or at least that's how it seems in the forums.

True, but in the specific case of Cynic, you can find lot of guys complaining about the death metal influences seen on Focus missing on their post-reunion albums.

Rating: 6 After some time, I feel like it just gets worse with repeated listens, the vocals irritate me more than before and the guitars lack any real edge to them. It's progressively degraded to just being a letdown for me. It just leaves an annoying, sour aftertaste.
Unhealer - 26.02.2014 at 01:57
Rating: 6 First song makes it promising, but then it's just average songs with one or two more decent ones. However, as mentioned previously, bass work is really impressive!
Luneth - 08.03.2014 at 12:11
Rating: 7 Im so torn at this release. Initial assessment: it is way below Traced in Air, which was arguably below Focus, but not in a great gaping way. This album is confusing, but that just makes me want to research it more. The majority of the songs are OK, Gitanjali and Endlessly Bountiful are abysmal in my opinion, they sound like the crap that was present on the Portal Tapes, fortunately most of the songs sound similar to Carbon Based Anatomy which is definitely a good thing. All in all, I don't know what to think yet.
