Jeroen Thesseling, born 13 April 1971, studied bass guitar at the Conservatory in Enschede, the Netherlands. After playing jazz in his late teenage years he collaborated with the Dutch death metal band PESTILENCE from 1992 till 1994, recording the jazz/ fusion-influenced album 'SPHERES' (1993) and touring Europe. Always willing to experiment and to deepen his knowledge of other genres, he began studying microtonal music in 1995 that resulted in his works 'HAFNIUM' - study in 72-tone equal temperament (1999) and 'ARGON' - study in 18-tone equal temperament (2000). The microtonal- and contemporary classical genre, mainly string quartets, inspired him to focus primarily on fretless bass. In 2005 he co-founded the world/ fusion oriented studio project SALAZH and recorded the promo 'COLORS'. From 2007 till 2011 Jeroen collaborated with the German progressive death metal band OBSCURA. He toured North America, Europe and recorded their albums 'COSMOGENESIS' (2009) and 'OMNIVIUM' (2011). During the period 2009-2012 he rejoined PESTILENCE after a 15-year break, touring North America, South America, Europe and recording the album 'DOCTRINE' (2011). Throughout his career, Jeroen became globally recognized for his signature fretless playing. In 2011 the German bass manufacturer WARWICK released a brand new Thumb NT 7 model for him, which is strung with an ultra-low F-sharp string. Since later that year he participated in several recording projects, including a collaboration with contemporary composer JURICA JELIC ('TRANSLUON' - for solo 7-string fretless bass). |
