Ray started teaching himself guitar at the age of 12 when he became obsessed with the lead playing of George Lynch, the riffs of Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath, and the thrash metal stylings of Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. At 15 he heard John Coltrane for the first time and immersed himself in harmony and Jazz. After stints at Berklee College of Music and The New School, he focused on his studies with the great pianist and educator Charlie Banacos. The hours of hard work that Charlie demanded expanded Ray's concept of musicianship and the dedication and perseverance that it requires.
While continuing to pursue jazz, Ray also remained active in the metal/rock scene with his band Colepitz (Wonderdrug Records). Once Colepitz separated, Ray started The Baltic Sea (Ericrock Records), which is a progressive post-rock band. In addition to Chaotic Negation, Ray is also currently playing with East of the Wall (Translation Loss).
