Sonata Arctica - Share New Album Details, Launch First Single

On September 6th, Finland's Sonata Arctica will release their tenth studio album, dubbed Talviyö (which means Winter Night). The album was recorded between September, 2018 and May, 2019, produced by Mikko Tegelman and the band in Studio57. Additional recordings took place in various other places. The mixing was done by Mikko Tegelman and Pasi Kauppinen and the mastering was handled by Svante Forsbäck. Sonata Arctica also present their first single from the album, "A Little Less Understanding", along with a lyric video.

"We were talking about having an album cover made from a photo and luckily managed to find this award winning photographer Onni Wiljami who actually hails from a village not too far from our hometown and his pictures were just perfect for this album", explains keyboardist Henrik "Henkka" Klingenberg. He adds: "We recorded a bunch of kick ass songs and tried some new stuff as well. I'm really proud of how we managed to record the band sounding more live, playing together instead of just tracking everything one by one."

"The idea was to create an album that is musically in line with at least the previous two albums", says vocalist Tony Kakko and adds: "I am very happy with the songs and the general mood of the album. Some career highlights there, I feel."

Tony Kakko on the new single: "The song is lyrically somewhat a follow-up for I Have A Right" and talks about the difficulty of making the right choices with the upbringing of a new human being."

It just doesn't have any energy to it. I really miss earlier SA.

Nice song, but I understand when people says they don't like this style adopted by SA.

Awful and completely forgettable song. In fact, I just finished listening to it and I have already forgotten how it goes.

It's a great pop song. Relaxed and easy to listen to. Tony still has a soulful voice. Is there still a guitarist in this band? Hate fade outs.

I agree with comments above. Really there is nothing thrilling in this song. Sounds like it's been made of boredom.

Yeah, it's not bad... just dull and underwhelming.

Although, is it really possible to still be underwhelmed considering Sonata's disappointing trajectory over the last... 10 years?

The dream is not alive.

It´s a cool song. Not old Sonata off course... far away from that, but I dig it anyway.

Have you tried Jani's post-SA work?

No. Can't say that I have. I wouldn't be opposed to giving it a listen when I get the chance though.

I like the simple lyrics, contrary to those poetic stuff from Unia. It's a simple and effective song. Not metal, really, but enoyable.

Horrible. How can the band that recorded Ecliptica, Silence & Winterheart's Guild, write such a bad song. Even by pop/rock standards, it's horrible. Even Circus Maximus last album was better and more memorable.
