Well, I think Stratovarius vs Cruachan would be a better example (Rhapsody being more of Symphonic Power and Finntroll Blackish Folk), but yeah.

Come to think of it, following this way of reasoning, Power Metal would be unneeded genre itself, since it's not that different from Heavy Metal

I think genres based on lyrical content alone are pretty silly. Grindcore has a lot of these, like goregrind and pornogrind. Likewise National Socialist Black Metal is also just about the lyrics. Troll metal is particularly bad since it is about the lyrics only and the sound can vary ridiculously much. Math metal is pretty silly, since it seems to be a pretentious way to talk about technical death metal. Also *name of country* metal says nothing whatsoever about what it sounds like.

what about "hair metal" or math metal? what is math metal even about??

the most stupid metal genre name has to be imo pornogrind or math metal,can someone please explain what these genres are about?

Math metal is just basically technical metal.Seeing the term math metal I was thinking of a band with a concept album called Addition and the whole album is one song long and the lyrics go 1+1=2+1=3 etc. but I was just being a jokester.Honestly Math Metal is the single handedly most retarded genre name there is.Whoever coined the term should be shot......

I defenetly agree! There is just nothing sillier for me... If names are silly and they are trying to destcribe the music it's still kind of ok (despite the fact that it's extreemely funny), but when the genre name reffers only to the lyrics it's just plain stupid.

I was actually lucky enough to see that band in August. They were brilliant live - they are also the only band I know to cover the theme to 'Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles' live.

@Deathrash: Now that I have heard nintendocore, I would classify it as a real sub-genre...why? because it takes hardcore/metalcore/whatevercore and adds nintendo-like keyboard effects to it...new and innovative fusions count as new breed of sub-genres in my mind...

What is the difference between Pornogrind and Porngore... Names like that sounds stupid... like poetic instrumental pink metal or something...

I will defend Pornogrind to an extent because it is always used as a distinction in lyrics than it is music, and in my experience has always been used more as a description than an ectual genre. Porngore however I've never heard of - although I'm actually gonna guess it's the same thing.

So what the hell does that have to do with anything? Hardcore/metalcore already have distorted guitars. Black metal bands have vocals low in the mix...what you have just sarcastically given as an example of generality wasn't very well thought out...

In any case, new sub-genres of metal are created by taking even the slightest outside elements and fusing them in with a metal base no matter how minor...nintendocore bands seem to take old soundtrack music of 8-bit nintendo games and fuse them together with hardcore and take old nintendo compositions and redo them in that style...

Maybe you should go and actually listen to some of the twelve bands that call themselves this...

12 bands count as a new genre? oh good. then i can think of about 50 new genres based on minor similarites between bands.

ive heard horse the band and they were pretty standard hardcore with gimmicky video game soundclips.

oh, and my last post was meant with a sense of humour. but my point still stands that "nintendocore" is just silly.

@tommy tee: Dude...I'm sure that when a lot of other sub-genres were just starting out they didn't have a lot of bands in their roaster either...well....I have sense of humor too beleive it or not...you can think it's silly all you want...you're entitled to your opinion...I'm not really here to defend nintendocore...but someone had to and that person was me I guess...end of discussion...

anything made up of more than 2 words is stupid unless it describes a fusion of genres which can't otherwise be described.

Well, it is not really a genre. It is more a description, just like 'Extreme' & 'Melodic'.
