The 80s music is not my cup of tea although there are some pop artist i enjoy; of course 80s rock is great but once too many times, these artist went on to create very comercial music to satisfy the mainstream listeners and MTV watches. Nevertheless here are some suggestions:
pop/pop-rock :
Peter Gabriel - Red Rain
Tears for fears - Shout
Eurythmics - Here Comes the rain
Pet Shop Boys - it's a Sin
Duran Duran - Planet earth/Girls on Film/Night boat/Save a Prayer (DD is truly great up to 1986)
A-ha - The Sun Always shines on TV/Scoundrel Days/Hunting High and low (A-ha is one of my favourite pop-rock bands, it's more than meets the eye, it's just a lot more than Take on Me)
Depeche Mode - Question of time/black celebration/Blasphemous rumours/People are People/Master and Servant (DM is an interesting band anyway, try them anyway)
Ultravox - Vienna/Dancing with tears in my eyes
Talk Talk (started as a pop-rock band, later to become a prog-rock act, starting with their third album) - It's My life/Such a Shame (try finding them anyway, really good band, amazing vocals IMO)
Genesis (went poppy commercial unfortunately but that's another sory) - Mama, Land of confusion, Tonight, tonight Tonight, Silver Rainbow, Domino.
Alphaville - Sounds like a Melody/jerussalem/Jet Set (their 80s albums are really good pop anyway)
Freddie mercury's solo stuff is great to listen ,too.

80s rock/metal has a lot of great cathcy songs:Queen, Bon Jovi, Scorpions, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, WASP, Night Ranger, Foreigner, Toto, Journey, Europe, Quiet Riot, Boston, Dire Straits. I'll be back with more examples.

Most of these may seem like obvious hits, but the hits will lead you to other songs by the band if you so choose to get into them...(most of these are metal/hard rock type anthems so youve probably heard them somewhere along the line)

Great White-Rock Me
AC/DC-You Shook Me All Night Long
Motorhead-Ace Of Spades
Ozzy-Flying High Again
Judas Priest-Devils Child
Dio-We Rock
Motley Crue-Red Hot
Metallica-Whiplash
Van Halen-I'll Wait
Anthrax-Madhouse
Overkill-Rotten To The Core
W.A.S.P-Running Wild In The Streets
Cinderella-Hell On Wheels
Guns N Roses-Rocket Queen
Danzig-Twist Of Cain
Skid Row-Sweet Little Sister
Faster Pussycat-Cathouse

That covers alot of my favorite songs from 80-89

The Boss. No seriously, how can you picture the early 80's without Bruce Springsteen? Most people agree his best time was 75-85. I really would recomend any of his albums from that period, especcially any live material. His live preformances are what every Metal band should aspire to be like.

On a similar note, John Cafferty the Beaver Brown Band. Most famous for doing the sound track to the cult rock film "Eddie and the Crusiers" (which happens to be one of my top 5 favorite movies). They had a hit song from that sound track with #7 hit single "On the Dark Side". From the soundtrack, that song and also "Tender Years", which I cry every time I hear it, are great. Also the song "A Season in Hell" is really well done. I use it as my theme song from some projects.

Yes, its a very good song by a very good band, worth listening to either way.

The Donnas came out with "Spend The Night" (on which "Take it Off" is the lead single) in 2003 or a little bit later. It's definitely influenced by the Eighties, though. Feed my Frankenstein came out in 1991, on Hey Stoopid.

Here are my picks, trying to exclude songs already mentioned:

Van Halen - Panama (from the album 1984, released in 1983)
Van Halen - Jump (from the album 1984, released in 1983)
Iron Maiden - Wasted Years (from the album Somewhere In Time, released in 1986)
AC/DC - Hells Bells (from the album Back In Black, released in 1980)
Ozzy Osbourne - Shot in The Dark (from the album The Ultimate Sin, released in 1986)
Poison - Talk Dirty to Me (from the album Look What the Cat Dragged In, released in 1986)
Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar on Me (from the album Hysteria, released in 1987)
Def Leppard - Rock Of Ages (from the album Pyromania, released in 1983)
Cinderella - Don Know What You Got ('Till It's Gone) (from the album Long Cold Winter, released in 1988)
Twisted Sister - I Wanna Rock (from the album Stay Hungry, released in 1984)
Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It (from the album Stay Hungry, released in 1984)
Skid Row - I Remember You (from the album Skid Row, released in 1989)
Skid Row - 18 And Life (from the album Skid Row, released in 1989)
Metallica - One (from the album ...And Justice For All, released in 1988)
Guns N Roses - Sweet Child Of Mine (from the album Appetite For Destruction, released in 1987)
Kiss - Forever (from the album Hot In The Shade, released in 1989)
The Cure - Love Song (from the album Disentigration, released in 1989)
The Cure - Just Like Heaven (from the album Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, released in 1987)
Pat Benetar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot (from the album Crimes of Passion, released in 1980)
Iron Maiden - The Number of The Beast (from The Number of The Beast, released in 1983)
Cindi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (from the album She's So Unusual, released in 1983)
Winger - Seventeen (from the album Winger, released in 1988)

It has a harder feel to it in most places, but I think it works.

Hi,

I think that you are not asking for metal songs. We metalheads are normally quite fond of getting to know-collecting bands before our age.

So I recommend to you these non-metal songs, though I am not so keen of other music in general other than classic and metal...and classic metal. hahaha.

Spandau Ballet: "Highly Strung", "Gold".
Boney Tyler: "Holding out for a Hero".
Yes: I can't remember any song title.
Jazz-like songwriters:
Tom Waits: "Soldier's things", but he has some songs so strange as himself that you really need to get used to his peculiar voice and style for liking him.
Rickie Lee Jones: "Skeletons", "Magazine", "We belong together", and many others
The Smiths: "Bigmouth strikes again", "Hand in Glove" and many others.
U2: "Sunday bloody sunday", "New Year's Eve"
Bauhaus: "She is in parties", "In the flat field"
O.M.D.: Enola Gay
Nena: 99 baloons.
Soft cell: "Tainted Love"
Other people has mentioned The Cure, Ultravox, The Police, Alphaville...and I agree with them as recommended bands.

ABOVE ALL, I recomment you all to listen to New Model Army. The first album is from 1984. It is a gothic rock quite elegant band with violins some times and with celtic-folk influences. There are so many great songs that is is quite difficult to chose one. "Vagabonds" or "The Charge" perhaps.

If you want 80's - more of the Wave stuff (which i consider the "spirit of the 80's" far moreso than pop music which really doesn't change) and you have iTunes, check out the radio options.

Radio Nigel is awesome - they play a lot of the classics by artists like The Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode - but tons of less common stuff as well, like Killer Pussy's "Teenage Enema Nurses in Bondage" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BJWAMd2IbI

Seem like I am the only person on this forum that really and truly hates ALL 80s pop music, be it wave, Neue Deutsche Well, or whatever.
But then again I also hate all current day pop, house, rap etc.
Yes, I am close minded when it comes to music. I just prefer Metal and what some of you call Hard Rock. But then again within those I am immensely open minded

I would recommend the Sisters of Mercy, if you haven't already heard them. Particularly songs like 'Walk Away', the epic 'Dominion/Mother Russia', and 'This Corrosion' - dark but very accessible British gothic rock, and it all sounds very '80's!'. The Sisters were also quite a big influence on some Metal bands such as Paradise Lost (who have covered 'Walk Away').

BTW, I'm moving this to the General Music forum, as the thread is about 80's music in general and not just rock.

Look at the age of the person who started this thread, us (us young folk that is), didn't have to live with it at all. Just watch, 20-30 years from now metalheads will be listening to Justin Timberlake and...whoever for a little tongue-in-cheek fun, and people my age will bitching about it in the collective human mind (<--Get it?).

Wow, when I tried to name some pop stars I couldn't name more than 1....I need to watch more TV.

BTW- Close minded? Pfft, people just don't know the difference between being close-minded and being selective.

EDIT: One of the greatest 80's songs IMO is Tygers Of Pan Tangs 'Gangland'. The solo in that is the definition of "Face-melter".
