"Therion is a Swedish symphonic metal band. Its name originates from Greek, where therion means simply beast; the name refers to the beast of the Christian Book of Revelation, however the band's name itself originates from the Celtic Frost album To Mega Therion. Therion was founded by Christofer Johnsson in 1987. Beginning as a death metal band, they later turned to combining orchestral elements with their metal music employing heavy use of choirs and classical musicians.
Therion's music takes its themes from different mythologies and is based on concepts ranging from occultism, magic and ancient traditions and writings. The majority of their lyrics are written by Thomas Karlsson, head and founder of the magical order Dragon Rouge of which Johnsson is a member. The band has seen many changes in line-up and style throughout its history"
This band to me, are absolutley sublime. The elements they combine are not only multifarious, but beautiful in the way they are placed and presented. Lemuria / Sirius B was an instant classic for me, so much more so than the bands previous endevours.
What do you all think of this terrific ensemble?

Therion is one of my favourite bands. Ack, everyone talks about how amazing they are live. I missed their only show they've ever played in Toronto and i'll never forgive myself.

I've just seen their new release (4 dvd's and 2 audio cd's 0_0) and it's amazing, nothing out of ordinary but the best of Therion brilliantly played in different stages, rare footage and the concert in mexico recorded in the audio cd's.

Account deleted Written by ylside on 25.07.2006 at 21:07 Sure I can. According to metal archives: 1. DVD 1 - Live in Mexico City 2004 2. DVD 2 - Therions' own documentary from the last World Tour (this is 3. DVD 3 - Various. All videoclips, TV performance, The Golden Embrace, a show recorded at Wacken open Air 2000 + more. 4. DVD 4 - Historical disc, a collection of bootleg recordings of songs from 1989-2001 with comments from the band. 5. CD 1 - Live in Mexico City (Disc 1) 6. CD 2 - Live in Mexico City (Disc 2) The one I find specially cool is the documentary about the world tour. I guy I know appeared on the footage recorded in the Bolivian airport ^^ (even when our scene is much bigger than bolivia's one, that country is more organized and has more international bands going there than us, so it's not rare for us peruvian to travel there sometimes), the guy appeared next to Christopher Johnsson, within the crowd that is. I've only seen the first and second discs, so I can't comment on the other ones, but it indeed is a cool set.

The DVD does no jsutice to what they're really like live but it's still good. Such a great band, I cant see how anyone would prefer 'typical' metal singing to Therion's vocals.

Therion is one of the first bands that got me into Metal, when I discovered them ,I still usted to listen mostly commercial music, and from the first time I heard their music, I fell in love with it, and still I really enjoy this band a lot, (I like only the melodic stuff, though I consider that the old stuff is good) One of the most interesting facts is that they write the lyrics based in lots of mythologies and themes like occultism, magic, ancient times, etc. that's what makes Therion a really unique band. My favorite albums are: The Secret Of The Runes, Deggial, A'Arab Zaraq - Lucid Dreaming, Vovin and Theli

@ demigod: why do you think they deserve to be more "popular"? I think everything's ok with Therion and how known they're. I'm not saying that being popular is wrong, actually more fans are just "welcome", but if Johnsson and the other band members do what they want because they want, and the most important, we, the fans, like what they do, it's more than enough.

I agree with Bitch Boy @demigod: did you mean something like Therion should have more fans? in that I agree but I wouldn't like if they become popular, it isn't necessary, not everybody is able to appreciate their music

Therion are awesome. I bought Sirius B/Lemuria and a friend gave me a copy of Theli and Vovin. They are genius man. JUst great symphonic/neo-classical stuff. I saw a video on youtube of them. I think it was Wacken or something, but they were so cool! I really want to see them live, but seeing as I live in Kansas, that ain't never gonna happen ever. I really need to move to Europe or something... but I don't wanna learn another language...

19.09.2006 - 20:59 Written by The Alchemist on 19.09.2006 at 01:54 Wow...I can't believe that anybody would want a band full of such awesome/talented guys to not be loaded with cash. They probably wont ever make millions off of their music, but it would be great to see them make a healthy living. It is so irritating to hear people say that "so and so" should not be popular and be making money. ARGH!

@ El Vikingo: no one ever mentioned money. I am happy that Therion (and the rest of the bands I like) make money because of the albums they sell or because of their concerts. I only said that fame isn't that necessary, because being a good musician doesn't mean that he/she should be famous. Actually, the opposite often happens.

Yes, the most important is the music, if someone is a really good musician, being famous is something that will come soon or late, but I prefer a good music instead a big fame

Well...they actually do have some extra choir sounds pumping out of the speakers in addition to the live singers. It would be impossible for the five singers to sound like the giant choirs that they use on CD. But, yes, they are fucking great live! By far the best concert I have been to. They NEVER forget that they are first and foremost a METAL band and that's what sets them apart from most other symphonic metal bands out there.

Recently got into this great band...what a diverse back catalogue! I've heard their first two albums, Vovin and Lemuria/Sirius B, and I love them all. The blend of classical music and metal is done in just the right proportion, and the use of varied mythologies in the lyrics gives the band's music a rich cultural texture. However, one thing confuses me. I watched many of the Therion videos on YouTube (recorded Live in Poland on the '98 Vovin tour), and I can't quite identify the guest female vocalist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLmHetv0bkQ&mode=related&search= I presume it's either Sarah Jezebel Deva or Martina Hornbacher, the sopranos who performed lead vocals on Vovin, but I just can't tell who it is. Any help?

20.10.2006 - 06:35 Written by RavenLord on 19.10.2006 at 20:13 That is definitely Martina in that video. If you watch the other live video of that same song at Wacken, you can see Sarah Jezebel Deva. She is the lager (well, she could squash Martina, anyway) lady with reddish hair.
