Who said Thrash was on its way out? From the first listen, the first riff of 'Clenching The Fists Of Dissent', you could tell that this was not so. Since Machine Head's début, 'Burn My Eyes' in 1994, they have done what they do best. Playing top-notch Thrash Metal. And their latest effort 'The Blackening' is definitely their best release so far.

I absolutely hate hearing people say that whenever they hear an awesome album, they think it's the greatest thing ever to come since sliced bread, and the fact the people consider something perfect is complete crap. This is what bothers me the most about Machine Head and The Blackening: it may very well be the greatest thrash album ever created in this generation (meaning the 2000s only of course).

Finally... Machine Head released an album in 2007 after four years of absence. Although not one of the biggest metal bands of the last 20 years (at that time), The Blackening was one of the most expected albums by all the fans or non-fans of the band. In my opinion, most of the fans wanted to see the direction the band was going to take. Machine Head had different styles through the years since their formation. In the entire album, one thing I have to say and honor is the outstanding performance of the band but mainly by Rob Flynn, finally he got a grip on his life, learned how to play guitar really well (before he almost never made a solo, in this album he makes solos in most of the songs), changed his life and that reflects in the entire album and his performance.

In my opinion this album is very overrated...although the longer songs are really well written.

Not heard the whole album yet, but Clenching The Fists Of Dissent literally made my jaw drop when it finally got heavy (and, at the time of comment, am less than seven minutes into it: when I first went to check the time, it was less than four minutes and I was stunned at how much time had passed) and Aesthetics Of Hate was incredible (although I got a bit bored during one section of the song). Pretty sure this is going to be getting purchased when I get a spare chance.

Edit: Finally purchased it. Don't like it as much as Unto The Locust (although, to be fair, I did get that one first and most people tend to like first purchases over anything else), but I would still recommend it to anyone who likes modern thrash metal. For now, however, it gets an 8.

I bought this album late last year already hearing beautiful mourning and aesthetics of hate. I didn't expect much from the rest of the songs considering that both songs are AMAZINGGGG!!!!!!!! But holy crap was I wrong. There are no fillers on this album first of all. Secondly every song has a great structure and none of them keep me bored. Last 3 tracks are my favs on the album atm. Especially farewell to arms every song has crunchy guitar riffs, pounding drums, great bass lines, and I forgot to mention HEAAVVYYYYYYY!!!!!!!! Easilly in my top 10 favourite metal albums

Oops... my 8 vote brought this album places down in top 200

I wish I could vote 9, but this album is 8.3/10 for me so far... Songs like Wolves or Farewell To Arms don't really appeal to me. Tracks 1, 4 & 6 are great though

Tried getting into this one again.

And again Robb Flynn's woeful attempts at crooning destroyed the flow of the album and put me in a vile mood.

Boy should stick to his heavy voice and use spoken word for the soft bits. Or get someone in that can sing.

This band has really managed to fail dismally after their first two albums and even then The More Things Change... started to lose steam.

Really? I don't mind his voice, both heavy and mellow. He isn't for everyone, though. I think the most common criticism I've hard of this album is the long songs - almost like a progressive thrash sort of thing going on. This is one of my favourite albums ever, so it really worked for me. I wasn't originally a fan of their first album but later got into it and think it is a real classic now.

I completely disagree just because of the song Halo.

I am still baffled to this very day about the 8.8 score this album gets here on MS and is also considered really good by loads of other people.

FFS get a producer in and cut down the fat on your songs. The same illness Exodus suffers from after Tempo Of The Damned.

And in this corner, Marcel "The Broken Record" Hubregtse futilely attempts to make his opinion mean anything other than the disillusioned cries of a bitter old man. Taking lessons from deadone, or is it the other way around? You decide!

People can bitch all they want; this is the most solid record released by MH since Burn My Eyes. The More Things Change... had like four good songs among all the filler, and it just went downhill from there, before being semi-redeemed by the okay-ish Through The Ashes Of Empires. Nothing will ever top Burn My Eyes, but this is the best thing MH releases in years (or the only good thing really, depending on how you feel about Unto The Locust, which, flaws aside, is also still preferable than anything post-BME).

I'm still baffled there are people that think otherwise.

We all have different feelings about music and what one considers really good, another thinks is average or terrible. I think the longer songs work here but that's just my view. Having read a lot of your posts, I can see you often disagree with a majority view anyway, so I'm not surprised you don't think much of this album.

Decent stuff. The problem is that some songs are longer than necessary and it makes the album tiring and a little bit boring sometimes.

That's Machine Head's signature songwriting, makes me wish I could chop 80% of their songs in half.

This and Burn My Eyes are probably their best albums honestly. Don't mind the longer track lengths, this thing packs riffs for days.

Easily Machine Head's best and one of the greatest metal albums ever made IMO. It influenced me a lot as a 15 year old discovering a passion for music and playing guitar (learning to play the whole album helped me improve my skills greatly).

9.9/10 for me - Beautiful Mourning and Slanderous are just a little weaker than the other songs.
