Curious to see what are everyone's favourite releases of the year so far (with descriptions please). Still have a few months to go with some very promising upcoming stuff but nowt wrong with keeping a running total.

Some of the very best and most impressive I've heard so far in no order:

Demiurg - Slakthus Gamleby
Bloodbath meets Edge Of Sanity. Old school death metal with a progressive bent; plenty of synths and clean vocals and a pristine production.

TenHornedBeast - Hunts & Wars
Incredible war themed drone and dark ambient from England. Huge, ominous soundscapes of deathly nothingness.

Cathedral - The Guessing Game
In a complete change of pace Cathedral unleash two CD's worth of psychedelic stoner doom that would make a fitting soundtrack to The Wicker Man. A bit of a polarising number.

Winterfylleth - The Mercian Sphere
Continuing the trend of English pagan black metal, the newest release of this band merges a smattering of post-rock and more contemplative atmosphere to create a worthy sophomore record

Yakuza - Of Seismic Consequence
Everyone likes jazz and metal and Yakuza exemplify the sound of smoky jazz bars and harsh hardcore infused metal and the result is a complex and expansive musical journey.

Blut Aus Nord - What Once Was... Liber I
The ever revolving BaN strike again with death-infused primal black metal, all the while maintaining their own unique signature sound. I love BaN.

A Forest Of Stars - Opportunistic Thieves Of Spring
Another impressive follow up to a highly acclaimed album. Very sophisticated and unusual atmospheric black metal characterised by the use of violin in a most effective manner. Just as good as the debut.

Menace Ruine - Union Of Irreconcilables
Mixing neo-folk, drone and noise, Canadians Menace Ruine carve a bit of a niche for themselves in the construction of opposing genres. Not for everyone but interesting if nothing else.

Fear Factory - Mechanize
Possibly their greatest album since Demanufacture? Altogether great song writing and worth hearing for the track Christploitation which could mark the future of the band.

Ramesses - Take The Curse
Comprising ex members of Electric Wizard you'd expect something excellent from this. And excellent it is. Electric Wizard meets Acid Witch: thick black psychedelic sludge with a 70's horror movie theme.

Killing Joke - In Excelsis
Don't really know how I feel about this yet. I like it a lot but the change in sound from the previous albums threw me a little so reserving judgement until the full length

Castevet - Mounds Of Ash
Highly original extreme progressive metal mixing black metal, hardcore and some compelling rhythms make this a firm favourite of mine.

Valborg - Crown Of Sorrow
Haven't listened to this very much yet but I know I like it. Progressive death metal with a variety of other dark nuances thrown in.

Integrity - The Blackest Curse
Extremely angry metalcore, but not metalcore as most people know it. Proper hardcore brutality with a bunch of thrashy numbers and surprisingly complex.

Knut - Wonder
They've toned down the noise since Challenger but the technical prowess on display on this sludgy hardcore record is truly bewildering.

Luasa Raelon - Vampyr: Light Of The Beast
Crap album name, awesome pulsating dark ambient and death industrial from Coldspring.

Robedoor - Burners
One of the ultimate drone/noise monsters get back on form with a concoction of world music spliced with droning feedback. More levels than Tetris.

And Beneath The Massacre is astonishing, in the way that they manage to take so many cocks in their mouths at the same time without choking to death.

That's what I call proper thinking.

Is there such a thing at all?

Anyways, off the top of my head, thrash is doing fine this year. Exodus, Heathen, Overkill - they all seem to have released solid slabs of good old thrash. The new Death Angel may turn out fine, but I listened to it only once yesterday, so it's too early.

The new Death Angel is for lighter, more casual metal fans. If you're the type that likes intense thrash like Exodus, it probably isn't for you.

Above all, I value good music, no matter if light or intense. I did notice that the sound was on a lighter side, but the first track struck me as very good. I definitely prefer the sound of Overkill or Exodus, but I won't dismiss DA on account on their friendly production.

Cool thread. I'll check out some of your recommendations, Joe!

I think I'm being pickier and more critical this year because I'm more "experienced" as a metal music listener, but I still have nevertheless found a lot of enjoyable albums (considering I've only listened to just slightly over 100 albums this year)

My top 15 so far (in a rough order)...

Negură Bunget - Maiestrit (Folk/Black)
Eibon - Entering Darkness (Sludge/Doom)
Alcest - Écailles De Lune (Metalgaze)
Kvelertak - Kvelertak (Black/Rock n Roll/Hardcore)
Laments Of Silence - Restart Your Mind (Melodic Death)
God Is An Astronaut - Age Of The Fifth Sun (Post Rock)
Ihsahn - After (Progressive)
Heaven Shall Burn - Invictus (Metalcore)
Royal Hunt - X (Progressive/Power)
Grand Magus - Hammer Of The North (Heavy)
A Forest Of Stars - Opportunist Thieves Of Spring (Black)
Fear Factory - Mechanize (Industrial)
Musica Diablo - Musica Diablo (Thrash)
In Mourning - Monolith (Progressive Melodic Death)
Solution .45 - For Aeons Past (Gothenburg)

All of them have been reviewed really... Other than Royal Hunt and its main pitch is the bluesy vocals

Other cool releases that are worthy of mentioning (no particular order):
Witchery - Witchkrieg (Thrash)
Black Sun Aeon - Routa (Melodic Death / Doom)
Watain - Lawless Darkness (Black)
Nachtmystium - Addicts: Black Meddle, Part 2 (Avantgarde)
Bison B.C. - Dark Ages (Sludge)
Living Sacrifice - The Infinite Order (Thrash)
Masterplan - Time To Be King (Power)
Axel Rudi Pell - The Crest (Heavy / Power)
Edenbridge - Solitaire (Progressive / Symphonic)
Rage - Strings To A Web (Heavy)

Mekong Delta - Wanderer On The Edge Of Time (disappointing compared to their other stuff)
this was imo's biggest let down for me

That puts it on a par with Exodus' latest where at least half the music featured is boring

Nightbringer - Apocalypse Sun
Hellish Crossfire - Bloodrust Scythe
Angantyr - Svig
King Of Asgard - Fi'mbulvintr

If I had to mention my biggest disappointment, it would be Gamma Ray "To The Metal". I usually enjoy their albums when I want to listen to something softer and more on the happy side but the new album sucks donkey balls.

I like my metal extreme, so no wonder I enjoy this album so much. But, yeah, it's more blasting and insanely fast in general than "Death And The Black Work". A very intense release.

EDIT: Talking of barrage of sound, however, I think Nightbringer's songs still have good structure and melody, and are quite listenable. If you really want to know what I consider as a fucking wall of noise with no interest, check Anaal Nathrakh. Now, that's fucking senseless noise and unlistenable.

Depends how you like your doom I guess, it's a very synth-laden record so quite epic and saturated with melody, though not in a cheesy way. If that's your bag then there's a lot to like. A million miles from Wormphlegm and that kind of doom though.

Well I actually prefer the more guitar driven records the likes of Ahab and Esoteric with the exception of Shape of Despair . in other words I like complex records where the guitar is not only a filler

EDIT: but will surely check them out , after all it is Doom

So far I've been impressed by these three BM releases:

There are still more interesting releases to come, like the new Melechesh, Drudkh and Carpathian Forest.
