An open letter to Arch Enemy.

Dear Arch Enemy,

Back where I come from we have this saying; "You can only hate Arch Enemy, if you hate having fun". So obviously I was pretty excited when I heard you were releasing your first studio effort in over six years (unless you want to count the utter abomination that was
Rise Of The Tyrant[i], which I kind of don't). After a couple of spins though, my excitement gradually turned into concern. Which is why I'm stepping up to lend a helping hand (which I assume was your intent, 'cause I'm just that modest).

FUCK YEAH!!!

Only complains I have is that too many instrumental stuff and other than the first one, the other 2 not really useful.

Though they're playing safe, I dont mind as long as they make good music. Rather than trying some new stuff which is crappy.

The word gen means "illusion" or "apparition." In India, a man who uses conjury is called a genjutsushi ["a master of illusion technique"]. Everything in this world is but a marionette show. Thus we use the word gen.

Yeah im listening to the album for the first time, its good, i still need to give it a few more listens before i can give my final verdict, the musicianship in the album is excellent possibly the most technical i have heard from the band. I'll rate it after a good few listens.

Ever since Angela got into the band, they got worse and worse... The first album with her is really good, but after that, they went down the road. I'm listening to it right now. It almost doesn't sound like the Arch Enemy I used to know. Sounds generic.

Nothing short of expection. Pure fukin' metal! If anything negative, I feel they've played it safe. Not necessarily a bad thing, but could have been nice to see an attempt at something different. 9/10.

Spelling Khaos with a "K" AND using the anarcho-punk "A", while letting the AE logo fly on black flags (another obvious symbol of anarchism) on the album cover seriously makes me want to blow chunks. Sorry guys, that is just too much for a man to handle. It's like slapping some mozzarella between two slices of cheddar and dressing the resulting thing that should not be with Cheez Whiz, calling it a "Cheezburginatorr". I just can't haz it!

However, and this is a big however, this album quickly manages to wash away that initial bad taste with some thrashy, balls-out Gothenburg metal.

I am not ready to rate yet after only a couple of spins, but the hate I see in this thread definitely seems unwarranted, even though I am admittedly biased as a long-time AE fan. I suspect the rating of this album will climb as people open their ears - the musicianship on display is seriously amazing. I do agree with the "not breaking new ground" comments, though. But once the Amott brothers get going with their duelling guitar stuff, I am just in heaven/hell/Nirvana/wherever the fuck you listen to pounding riffs and awesome solos. Can't help it.

Angela has improved her thing, although it certainly remains the same thing as before. I love her sound now - it's closer to Doomsday Machine, but more of her and less effects, but I wish she would go with some new rhythms and structures. She does seem to have gained a new squeal-type growl on tracks such as Bloodstained Cross, but she could do with more variety. Cruelty Without Beauty shows some new stuff which I really like - more like that, please! I also heard she was taking clean singing lessons - sorry to all trve types, but I would actually really like to hear a little of that next time.

This album also has more catchy riffage than the last one, and I seriously want to turn this thing up to 11. Yes, it's all a bit commercial, it has a cheesy intro and the production is squeaky clean, but my goodness, these people can handle their instruments. Special props go to Daniel Erlandsson for his inhuman drumming skills - a joy to listen to every single time, and this is no exception.

On the whole, the album does seem to have some weak tracks about two thirds in, and I wish they had just cut it down a bit. It's as if all AE albums must have some mediocre filler, and that stops them from ascending to the highest peaks. However, in this digital age we can playlist us out of that, and I certainly see myself listening to this quite a lot for the rest of the year. Khaos Legions is not the perfect album that I suspect the band still has in them, but it is a step in the right direction, even if it's a relatively small one.

[Edit] I feel there's more to this album than you'd think at first. AE have always delivered some growlalong-friendly stadium metal, but that is only the top layer here. I am especially enjoying the almost Brian May-like solos from Michael Amott, the way he constantly delays and draws notes out even during faster sequences. Unfortunately some of it sounds almost identical to solos from previous albums, but the production is just so good this time that they feel fresh again. I accidentally played a track from Rise of the Tyrant inbetween two tracks from Khaos Legions, and I actually thought my speaker had malfunctioned - it simply sounded way worse.

For now I'm hugely disappointed. Unless it'll grow on me at some point, this is a pretty low point in their career.

I rate it a 9 because I think it's a great album. I'm saying it could have been nice to see something new, but it's still Arch Enemy and the content is great.

In my opinion they've gotten worse with every release since Angela took over vocal duties (though I know it's not her responsibility to write the music - it's just coincidentally worked out that way).

No, it's some peoples' definition of what metal is and isn't. And there's no accounting for taste. But I like this album too - I've been listening to it a lot since its release, and I think I would rate it an 8. Can't quite make up my mind.
