Could anyone recommend some bands from the melodic metal genres that incorporate a somewhat mystical sound in their music? It's a little vague, but I'm not totally sure what I'm looking for anyway. Maybe incorporation of soundscape type elements? Thanks!!! I appreciate any replies!

Now this is a stretch. What is exactly "mystical" about metal?

Melodic metal with a mystical sound in their music, what else

To the OP: Are you looking for something exotic/oriental, or simply something eerie, or something with chants...?

I can only understand lyrically, but sound-wise? I mean I personally listen to a lot of "occult" black metal, but it's still just black metal at the end of the day.

What's not mystical about metal? It all depends on the feeling it gives the listener personally. If it gives you that feel, than feel free to mention it.

Either or. South or Middle American sounding stuff would be cool too. A bit of a Mayan, Incan or Aztec type vibe.

I'm actually not familiar with those bands. I've only been into metal for a year and a half now, so I'm still learning =)

Hmmm, you can go to some of the folk threads here, since a lot of users like digging up stuff like that. As for eerie music - have you tried listening to just pure ambient instead of metal? I like putting Nox Arcana up for a gothic cathedral atmosphere

Nice idea. Thanks! I probably should have thought of that earlier.

You can also try thinking of the eeriest band you know, and then looking up "similar bands" on their last.fm page. Hope I was of help.

Towards the end of the song there is some cool chanting and dijeridoo.

I think there's also a lot of good Melodeath and Folk Metal out there which I feel could be described as 'mystical'. Check out Gallowbraid, Manegarm (definatly the song 'Hemfard') , Ulver (also good ambient!), Eluveitie, Insomnium, Baroness (more sludgey/physcadelic). If you like any of these and would like more suggestions I can think of a few Happy listening!

When I think of mystical-sounding music I think 1. Awe-inspiring. 2. Highly emotional. 3. Incorporating some sort of ethereal atmospheric element, namely with keyboards. And all of that leads me to various Lost Horizon songs.

There is a very spiritual aspect to their music, although it's not religious. And the singer goes AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps, but I suppose I was looking for especially mystical power or progressive metal =) Something a little exotic with lots of atmosphere

I can honestly say I was dumbfounded at first when reading the topic's title, but I'm beginning to understand what people deem to be "mystical".

I suppose I haven't heard of any kinds of mystical metal because most of the stuff seems to be in the power/prog/heavy/etc genres and I don't really spend too much time with those.

The truly mystical thing would be if the music posted here wouldn't make me puke
But more on topic I don't hear anything mystical in the music posted here at all

Mystical music is music intended to achieve union with God. That's what mysticism is, after all. It's a specific kind of religious experience/practice.

Hildegard von Bingen was a mystic who composed (rather original) music. Sufi mystics also use music in their mystical exercises. So I imagine you would want to look into metal remixes of stuff like that. Just any Gregorian music isn't mystical, by the way; it's usually written for ecclesiastical and monastic context strictly within the realm of normal orthodoxy.

Would be nice if fightwithsteel named at least one band that he thinks as "mystical", otherwise it is difficult :S

Then Teitanblood - Seven Chalices and Necros Christos - Doom Of The Occult could actually be deemed mystical music.

Oops the two I mentioned don't belong in melodic metal forum at all. even though they aren't actually metal; but more like hard rock The Devil's Blood would fall intot his category
