My friend's dad was huge punk skater back in the 70's and 80's and most of what he listened to was hardcore and classic punk, he said that the movie SLC Punk! was pretty much his life, and the only metal he said he ever liked was death metal and grindcore, he is a huge fan of Napalm Death, and also said he liked bands such as Carcass, Obituary, Decide, Repulsion and Siege. Besides Iron Maiden he said he didn't like any other classic metal, hair metal or thrash. I was wondering if anyone else growing up in that era who listened to punk or had any friends who did are or were in the same situation, is there any correlation between punk and death metal that strike an interest in punks? I do enjoy punk and death metal but I'm not seeing it.

I can understand a punk from that era getting into thrash or even the black metal back then, but death metal seems kind of a strange mix with punk, don't think there was any deathcore back then either

Swedish Death Metal is influenced quite a bit by punk. Bands such as Entombed back then and now Miasmal, Maim and such incorporate quite a bit of D-beat punk in their music.

Exactly, quite a few old school death metal bands (specially swedish ones) had some notorious D-beat/punk/hardcore/crust/whatever feeling to it.

...and just now I'm working on a review (friggin finally) of a swedish band I just discovered that does some decent d-beat/crust inspired metal.

Grind bridged the gap between punk and death metal with politically charged lyrics and hyper charged tempos, so it's not particularly surprising. most likely the reason some people make that walk (i did as well, though around '91) is just the raw speed and ugly production values give DM the same adrenaline rush that people get from punk. only without being preached at.
