Ok, a new year had passed and I think it was rather good for Black Metal, I heard lots of shit I loved... my list of the top of the year would be the following for Black Metal:

1) Wolves In The Throne Room - "Diadem Of The 12 Stars"
2) Bloodthorn - "Genocide"
3) The Shadow Order - "Untold"
4) Clandestine Blaze - "Church Of Atrocity"
5) Urgehal - "Goatcraft Torment"
6) Nihil Nocturne - "Tod.Verrat"
7) Wyrd - "The Ghost Album"
8) Dark Fortress - "Seance"
9) Aborym - "Generator"
10) Carpathian Forest - "Fuck You All"

not really black metal, but almost, and worth mentioning:
1) Ajattara - "Apare"
2) Manatark - "Crimson Hours"
3) Circle Of Ouroborus - "Shores"

dissapointments:
1) Cradle Of Filth - "Thornography" (consider me a fan of them)
2) Helheim - "The Journeys And Experiences Of Death"
3) Satyricon - "Now Diabolical"
4) Melechesh - "Emissaires"

overrated:
1) Xasthur - "Subliminal Genoicde"
2) Peste Noire - "La Sanie Des Sicles"

I won't comment them all, but "Wolves In The Throne Room" totally deseves a special mention, as their album was as outstanding as surprising... I had heard many people labeling them as Weakling clones, but althiugh the Weakling influence is obvious, WITTR totally managed to create something unique, with complex songwriting and a chilling atmosphere...

By side of Bloodthorn, they had been one of my favourite bands since the melo-black epic piece "In The Shadow Of Your Black Wings" was released a long time ago, but from that innocent disc they dramatically evolved to brutal, highly nihilist Black/Death on the Belphegor vein since "Under The Reign Of Terror" (2001), but what they crafted this year with Genocide is superb, filthy black exhaling a truly rotten dirty stench.

But well, the suprise of the year was obviously The Shadow Order... I usually can't stant NSBM, but these greeks did something really good here with "Untold", a fierce piece of thrashy black with an evil, penetrating high scream and corrosive riffing... everyone should check this...

Carpathian Forest's "Fuck you all" is a great release indeed. Gorgoroth's "Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam" was a great dissapointment, and it's even more noticed because "Twilight of the idols" was a very good one.

Well, last year I was more orientated on other genres. Black metal is great for what it is, but I know the top of it now, so I only try the albums of those bands, the rest doesn't really interest me anymore. Because of that I haven't listened to enough new releases from the black metal scene to form a top 10. The current top 10 I have of 2006 contains 3 black metal albums, which are in my opinion, also the only 3 albums that are worthy to mention in this topic.

I am talking about Carpathian Forest's "Fuck You All !!!!", Bishop of Hexen's "The Nightmarish Compositions" and Darkthrone's "The Cult is Alive". Carpathian Forest's and Darkthrone's album were both very good for the same reason. Primitive, not-so-serious black metal, and personally I have a slight weak spot for brainless black metal. As long as it doesn't contain Satan-shouting every minute. Bishop of Hexen's new album was disapointing, but it was also excellent. You have to admit that the production was flawless, and that the entire album is full with quality songs. It is only dissapointing they decided to take a direction which has been already taken by many other bands(Arcturus, Dimmu Borgir?). Because of that they might lose their uniqueness, so they will not leave their name in scene of symphonic black metal.

About other black metal releases, the new Ancient Rites album was enjoyable, but it was far away from the quality of Dim Carcosa. Maybe they got lazy, or just made a too perfect album in 2001. Bal-Sagoth, as far as we can call it black metal, released a nice album, but the album bored me really quickly. Mystic Circle's new album felt empty, on the other albums I have heard of Mystic Circle the keyboards were a lot more present, now you could hardly hear them. Because of that the album really missed something, which made it an inferior release compared with other Mystic Circle albums. Satyricon's new album was just crap. This band never released one good album actually. In my opinion of course, before people start to tell me thousands of reasons why their albums are good. Now Diabolical is just laughable for a band with so much experience, even Satyricon could do better than this. Oh, and the new Venom album, I have listened to that one once. I always had a difficulty with enjoying Venom for a long time, I guess this album suffered the same symptom. so overall, my incomplete top 10 would be:

1.Carpathian Forest - Fuck You All !!!!
2.Bishop of Hexen - The Nightmarish Compositions
3.Darkthrone - The Cult is Alive
4.Ancient Rites - Rvbicon
5.Bal Sagoth - The Chthonic Chronicles
6.Mystic Circle - The Bloody Path of God
7.Satyricon - Now Diabolical
8.Venom - Metal Black
9.?
10.?

I do still want to listen to the new Countess album, but sadly, I can't find it anywhere. I am really curious about Orlok's new album, and I am so sure that album will be added to the releases I like of this year, so.. I might add that one later after I have finally found it somewhere. I also still have to try the new Astarte album, which was released last month. I didn't really have the opportunity to listen to it yet. Simply for one reason, the release date was horrible. I don't like it at all when bands release their albums in December.

oh I just posted that as an explanation why I didn't post here yet.
commercialism is only something that kvlt kiddies worry about, such thing as black metal can never become a commercial product, because then they need to change the sound so much that it isn't black metal anymore(see: Cradle of Filth). At least, I assume you mean commercialised when you typed "comecrised". Personally I like it when bands experiment in their album covers. Using the same cliché over and over again becomes kinda lame after a while don't you think.

good to know you agree with me about BM.

Suddenly I noticed Luna Ad Noctum in your list, I didn't know they released a new album. I am going to try that one too. I used to like them..for a few months They never were anything inspiring, but hey, they are worth a try. They always released enjoyable symphonic black metal albums. Only just not as good as some of the leaders in this genre.

Well, to show my total lack of awareness about black metal I would like to claim that "Ruun" by Enslaved was the greatest black metal release in 2006 although it's quite obvuous that Enslaved is not black metal, at least when we try to see things strictly enough. Fascinating album nonetheless.

I also enjoyed Drudkh and Lifelover quite a lot. And also "Crimson Hours" by Manatark - best Estonian "black metal".

@Blackgir - haha what is kvlt
Yes but maybe comercalisms int wright name but i just chacked covers BM covers and in early 90ties, forests, walleys, anient lands, mystic places, lakes, legends, fogs and so on was on cover, but nowdays some pentagrams and somekind of monster horns
Dimmu Borgir, ok I cant think examoles but even Entonbed all album covers has chaged I prefere old verse of album covers
I dont think because its wierd thing but i like that type of covers what i mention, its emotions and atmosfere if you keep original CD but I dunno if I be satifield of music if album cover be 'evil'' but its my IMO so

Yes I mean commercialised

Luna Ad Noctum - I hear it once or twice in summer and I doubt my mother hold it in her PC because it was fcuked up

I like first album of them, but i hawnt listening them so much

1. Extinction - Down Below the Fog (a reissue of an old demo, but it deserves a mention anyway)
2. Circle of Ouroborus - Shores
3. Lifelover - Pulver
4. Wolves in the Throne Room - Diadem of 12 Stars

I havent gotten around to checking out much new stuff in 2006. I still need to get some stuff like the new Archgoat, Peste Noire and Amesoeurs.

I found it to be a disappointing year in black metal althought here were a couple of really good releases

Sayricon - Now, Diabolical was brilliant in its simplicity
Enslaved - Ruun, again another very good album by them
Melechesh - Emissaries, though half thrash their best album to date, by way their most mature.
Xasthur - Subliminal Genocide was helped by finally a good sound for Xasthrus standards
Clandestine Blaze - Chruch of Atrocity a very veryg ood CB album with that distinctive CB sound
Darkthrone - The Cult Is Alive just like Satyricon brilliant in its rock and rollish simplicity
Negura Bunget - good but too long IMO.
Drudkh - Blood In Our Wells, much better than Swan Road and a better production to boot it.

Biggest disappointments:
The quality of BM releases in general this year,
and more specifically

Keep of Kalessin - Armada, although in itself not a bad album it was totally DESTROYED by the production which was way to clean and took ALL the atmosphere away, making it sound like an overporduced power metal album. And also their songs have now become a dime a dozen losing that little bit of own sound KoK used to have.

but totally nothing prepared me for the shock yet to come...

Wyrd - The Ghost Album. I don't mind it that they DON'T play black metal on this album anymore, but why the hell settle for a third rate Paradise Lost (Draconian Times, Icon, Shades of God era) clone. All that made Wyrd special before can't be heard at all on this album. They just seemed to settle for some boring run of the mill doom.

I agree , seems old good bands just realsesed albums and useing past glory and them name, not amymore muisc, I talking about satyricon, CoF, BoH, but IMO good albums was from unknow bands and a lot of good demo was realised and its hard to follow to all BM scene I had poor info about German, French, Italian scene, but i had realised god stuff, and well IMO ist always hard to tell top 10 of year

BTW Entroned or that BIG belgium band, tahy realised soemthing if yes its disapointment IMO.

One night I went to bed loving Livelover, and somehow woke up next morning hating them... The opposite happened with Circle Of Ouroborus... they would certainly be on my list, but it's hard for me to label them as black metal...

and avoid Peste Noire.. much blablabla about it but it's horrible

Didn't purchase too many myself.

My favorites list would include:

Wolves in the Throne Room - Diadem of 12 Stars
Darkthrone - The Cult is Alive
Enslaved - Ruun (if you can even call them bm)

Didn't really buy that much new music at all this year, though. I picked up maybe eight albums that were released in 2006.

Comming up with even 10 good bm albums 2006 is hard...

1. Drudkh - Blood in Our Wells (Incredible album, so much emotion and so many beutiful melodis, really love this album)
2. Sombre Chemin - Notre héritage ancestral (Not even half as brilliant as Doctrine, but still great)
3. Negura Bunget - OM (good but to long...)
4. Amesoeurs - <Cant remember name> (good Ep, continues in the spirit of alcest while alcest goes shogaze)
5. Peste Noire - <Insert uberlong name> (The production kills this album, but still the songs on it are great...Fact is... its just here to make 2006 look less tragic)

.......theese five albums are the only ones I can think of atm worth mentioning..

Dissapointement list:
1. Satyricon - Now Monotone (Quite possibly the most dull cd I have heard..)
2. Gorgoroth - Satan Satan Satan somthing (Booooooooring)
3. Aborym - Generator (This was incredibly lame... I liked the eariler aborym releases but this sounded more like cradle of filth or something..horrible)

Judas
The Amputator
Hmmm, for me the 10 best from last year, in no particular order, would have been:

Drudkh - Blood in Our Wells
This album is next to flawless. I like the production, the drawn-out riffing, the simplistic drumming, the solos, the cinema interludes...
Xasthur - Subliminal Genocide
Many people hated this album, because it was pretty much the same as all other Xasthur releases. I like Xasthur, so I like this release, I guess...
Summoning - Oath Bound
Hey, it's Summoning! Of course they'll make this list, I'm a total fanboy!
Darkthrone - The Cult is Alive
Probably the most 'fun' Black Metal album of the year along with Carpathian Forest's effort, but a lot better overall. I didn't like 'Fuck You All!!!' half as much as this. This was Darkthrone's way of giving the finger to current trends in Black Metal. They're still the tr00-est of the tr00.
Peste Noire - La Sanie des Siècles
A strange one, but beautifully made. If anyone says that Black Metal is not an art form, they should listen to this album. Some don't like it though, and I can understand why, but I do nonetheless.
Keep of Kalessin - Armada
Everyone whines about the overproduction on this album. I like it, because the guitars are wonderfully audible and we can all marvel at Obsidian C's speed.
Enslaved - Ruun
Alright, this album is really on the margins of what can be called Black Metal, but it's a release that gets better each time you hear it. I can get used to Enslaved sounding like this.
Melechesh - Emissaries
I don't think this album is as good as 'Sphynx', but it's still a top-notch release. They're one of the few bands who have managed to evolve without releasing utter crap along the way.
Negurã Bunget - OM
Complex in that it is multi-layered but simplistic in its melodies. I cannot describe this release effectively, it's that fucking good, though I agree that after a few listens it can drag on a bit.
Thundra - Worshipped By Chaos
I know this is verging towards a Viking sound, but it still is a very solid release, and one that's massively under-appreciated.

I was a little disappointed by Satyricon's 'Now, Diabolical', though nothing was crappier than Gorgoroth's 'Ad Majoram Sathanas Gloriam'. I've never been a big fan of Gorgoroth, so I didn't really have high expectations for this album, but jeez, I wish I could get my half hour of wasted time back that I spent listening to it! Dissection's 'Reinkaos' was a let-down as well.
