Well Im building up my Techinical Death Metal collection and im wondering what bands and albums should be needed in this collection, and thought that a thread needs to be made for recommendations on this. Im a fan of Psycroptic, Suffocation, and Cryptopsy.

Any list albums that should be inclued in the collection, bands and/or albums.

EDIT: Now we've got a lot of Tech DM bands added, make sure you go through and check if the band has been added or not, saves a bunch of repeats. Also lets get a little discussion about some of the bands.

The only good tech death band I can think of that nobody has mentioned in this forum yet is Atheretic.
They are highly, highly recommended. Fast, brutal, unrelenting, and technical as hell.

If you consider grindcore to be a subgenre of death metal, then Mucopus also qualifies and is highly recommended.

Alarum anyone? I've only heard them live, but they seemed pretty good. They kinda tried too hard to be like Atheist, but they still put on a good show. I heard that they're not that good on cd, however.

I don't think !T.O.O.H.! has been mentioned yet, but what do you guys think of Between the Buried and Me? There's no doubt that they are technical, but there not really pure death metal. I don't know what they are...

They're a mix between like 20 different things to be honest, they're usually throwing elements from all different kinds of genres arond. Yes they are quite technical but I really don't like them. To me it all sounds like random sounds and changes that confuse me and take away from the song rather than add to it.

True but the thing with Between the Buried for me is that one second they'll be playing something DM-ish, then tempo change and it'll sound like something completely different. With Cryptopsy I think the changes and all flow nicely and add to the song, and like I said I think BTBAM's changes take away from it. Maybe I just can't catch on to their whole concept but that's what I've heard from them.

I recently checked out Joe Payne's band Domination Through Impurity and they have some wicked music. They have one full length album named 'Essence of Brutality' and it is just that. One way to describe the album would be "technical insanity." It has some really wicked riffing and vocals, while the electronic drum sound leaves something to be desired, it can be looked past. Adding in Payne's growls, the music comes out as brutal as can be. Something really wicked music, check it out. By the way, I had no idea Joe Payne was so talented.

Well with Opeth their changes don't sound random or anything, that's the beauty behind them. It all flows nicely, which isn't the case with BTBAM. I don't mean to argue or anything just prove a point. To each his own.

So....I got a hold of Weeping Birth. They're alright . On the brutal side. Think of a slightly more mellowed Beneath The Massacre, having the same extraneously prolonged 4/4 guitar wizardry(or wankery, you choose) as Necrophagist. But they do have an element of Black Metal, with subtle keyboards and their slower portions reminded me of some interludes of Deathspell Omega. Not too technical per se in the time signature shift area, or even in the musical theory aspect, but they did manage to hold my interest to go through the entirity of the album. Good production. You can hear almost every note. But don't think of 'em as a total Necrophagist clone. There are hardly any solos to be found here. What made them more listenable(and therefore better) than Beneath The Massacre was:
1. The Keyboards - They add a different aura to the music
2. No lame hardcore breakdowns - which is a good thing
3. Not everything is at 250 bpm blastbeat speed.

So, they ain't all that bad.
I'd say 7.5/10.

Indeed. I would not say they are clones of each other, but they are definitely closely related in sound. Beneath the Massacre is pretty wicked. They come out near here in July, I might go and see them.
