Confess interview (10/2021)

With: Nikan Khosravi
Conducted by: RaduP (skype)
Published: 27.10.2021

Confess as a band itself is probably a name that isn't familiar to most people. After all, most Iranian metal doesn't really get much of a traction. But I'm sure a lot of us are familiar with Confess' story, even if we don't recognize their name, as the band that were arrested for playing metal. Having fled to Norway and reactivated the band in order to keep making music, Nikan's story is a stark reminder of the rebellious and regime-defying nature of art. Me and Nikan talk about Iran's history, music under the state's permission, and being an artist in exile.

Revenge At All Costs, will be released on the 21st of January 2022 through Rexius Records.

I agree with your prior assessment that this is almost certainly your best interview. Honestly, I think this sets a new standard for us; it's a slice of real journalism. As fun as it is conducting/transcribing/reading interviews with more local musicians about tours and jokes and David Lynch, there are some really serious topics packed into this one and the Confess saga is both infuriating and inspiring. I'm glad you took the opportunity to talk to Nikan about everything and really dug into some of the implications of everything that has been happening with him. He seems like a really cool guy and I loved hearing you talk about Iranian history, culture, and society together. I also love it when people say that they've never been asked these questions in interviews before; that's something to take pride in.

I had to pause partway through and listen to their last single again. I don't know that it's going to be my preferred style, but after this I have to listen to Revenge At All Costs at all costs.

That's mostly why I made that statement in the first place, it feels like it revolved around an experience that has something to say about life, and maybe also because it's more extraordinary. It was the kind of discussion that really has some insight to offer. Nikan is indeed a really cool guy.

Wanted to make that Iranian song suggestion list but I'm so fucking lazy, aside from the university stuff.

So I finally found the time to watch this one and it was well worth the time. I haven't heard an entire album from his band, just a few songs, but I will check out the new one when it lands. Nikan seems like a great guy, very interesting interview, I would be happy to watch another hour of this kind of talk.

I'm really late here but it was a great listening for sure.Definitely one of your best interviews and Nikan does indeed seem like a great person. Glad he is able to perform and live his life even though the circunstances were so dire.
