The Best Metal Albums* From A To # (O)

This list is meant to be an extensive, but by no means exhaustive, collection of the greatest (modern) metal albums and eps. Running the gamut from avant-garde to trve norweigan black metal. *As someone who is young in age, my tastes tend to revolve around the period of the 80s to the present.* Although certain metal albums from before will certainly be featured, the period of the 60s-70s will be under-represented. I refer you to this excellent list to gain a better appreciation for some of the best metal from that period: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/freis/martin_popoffs_the_top_500_heavy_metal_albums_of_all_time/

1.Oak - Lone
2.Oath To Vanquish - Applied Schizophrenic Science
3.Oathbreaker - Rheia
4.Obake - Mutations
5.Obituary - Cause Of Death

Diverge's Alternative/Prog/Jazz/Avant-Garde Favs

LATEST EDIT: December 12/2016- Added a whole bunch of progressive rock albums; processing earlier suggestions on the list.

Assembled below are some choice selections in alternative metal, prog rock, prog metal, jazz and avant-garde metal. I don't necessarily consider these styles to be my favourite (I do have a penchant for post-metal and cavernous death metal these days), but they have been the foundations of my taste for the last seven or eight years.

1.
2.Soundgarden - Down On The Upside
3.Rishloo - Living As Ghosts With Buildings As Teeth
4.Karnivool - Asymmetry
5.Blindead - Absence

Progressive Metal Bands For People Who Hate Prog

Progressive metal has some of the most creative musicians in metal, but the tendency for progressive bands to make extremely long, technical songs with no sense of structure can be turnoff to some people, and often these bands take themselves too seriously, making them unenjoyable for people who like their metal to have some good rock n' roll fun. These bands frequently avoid such prog cliches, they are completely capable of writing a pop song without sacrificing complexity if they choose to, and weave a range of influences in creative and even fun ways.

1.Devin Townsend - Accelerated Evolution
2.Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
3.Toehider - What Kind Of Creature Am I?
4.Coheed and Cambria - Volume 4
5.Mastodon - Once More 'Round The Sun

Most Talented Vocalists In Metal

My other lists:
Tasty Stuff Not Currently Featured On MS
So I Heard You Like Opeth...

A concise list of my metalhead man-crushes (now featuring ladies.)

While there is little introduction required for some of these bands and their front(wo)men, there are no words that can accurately describe such jaw-dropping talent anyhow. The albums and youtube links listed are meant to display the full capacity of vocalists' talents, not the bands' most quality or popular tracks - click the links below and behold the prowess.

1.Abstrakt Algebra - Abstrakt Algebra
2.Adagio - Underworld
3.Akercocke - Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone
4.Amorphis - Silent Waters

My share of experime(n)tal music and other innovative stuff

I wanted to create my personal Top List for a long time and to be honest, I always considered it as some kind of cool Prog Metal, Avantgarde Metal mix. As you can see, it has become a bit more complicated. So finally, there are Unexpect and Pain Of Salvation next to Bands like Kamelot and Savatage. Also, some Non-Metal Bands got involved like Jeff Buckley and Oingo Boingo. But could you imagine how PoS would sound without Jeffs influence? Or what would have become of Mr. Bungle if it weren't for Danny Elfman and Oingo Boingo?!

1.Pain Of Salvation - The Perfect Element, Part I
2.Kalisia - Cybion
3.Savatage - Streets: A Rock Opera
4.Dog Fashion Disco - Adultery
5.Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
