IMAAAAGINATION! =3

My favorite element about music is probably atmosphere. My mind is a lazy, albeit adventurous, asshole that likes to take vacations whenever it can. And what better than the surprise mental adventures that music takes you on? SHUT UP. SHUT UP. Nothing is better. Whether I'm whisked away on the wings of a dragon, sitting around a campfire with a group of vikings just before battle, wandering around a haunted castle, or floating around FUCKING SPACE, I love these adventures. Yes. Yes, I do. And here are my favorite albums that have incredible atmosphere for me to get lost in. (No particular order)

1. Bal-Sagoth - Battle Magic
2. Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
3. Green Carnation - Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness
4. Rhapsody Of Fire - Dawn Of Victory
5. Les Discrets - Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées

Supermassive List: Top 20 Picks of Each Year of the Last Decade (2000-2009)

This is not a typical "Best of the decade" list. To be more precise, it's a list about the top 20 albums of each year of the last decade, in my perspective of course. In this way, a lot of good albeit overlooked albums can get some exposure, in addition to covering more ground at the same time.

1. 2009
2. Sybreed - The Pulse Of Awakening
3. Ghost Brigade - Isolation Songs
4. Porcupine Tree - The Incident

Promo's Picks Of The Passing Decade

Actually I wanted to write a blog as several of my colleagues, but now that we have this nifty new feature there's no reason to bother with formatting all the pics and stuff

So this was it. The decade which saw me turning into a metalhead. Actually I've been listening to metal since 17 years now, but not on a regular basis. This changed (to the better) when I joined this site in the good old days of MSR. Agalloch, Anathema and Tristania got me used to growls, Immortal and Agathodaimon to extreme metal as a whole and soon enough I was hooked to the vast plethora of styles which are to be found in heavy metal. The following list presents my personal top 50 of this decade. The order isn't really set in stone, neither is my musical taste, but at least the top 10 are somewhat fixed. Especially the 2009 releases, of which none made it into my top 25, might not stand the test of time. And please don't message me because you disagree with some of the genres, they are neither there to be discussed nor to educate, but to give an impression what the bands sound like. If you have about the same (broad) taste as I have, but aren't familiar with some of these releases, try to get your hands on them. You won't regret it

1. Negură Bunget - OM
2. Agalloch - The Mantle
3. Redemption - The Origins of Ruin
4. Dark Tranquillity - Character
5. Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro

A Quick Guide For Thrash Metal, Sex, And Tacos!

Thrash Metal is, and will always be my favorite type of music. No matter how many sub-genres or idiotic names some bands give to their music style, they'll never reach the complex "simplicity" of Thrash metal. It's raw, heavy, fast, aggressive, and has a historical impact that probably no other type of heavy metal style will ever reach.

1. Venom - Welcome To Hell
2. Discharge - Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing
3. Suicidal Tendencies - Suicidal Tendencies
4. Metallica - Ride The Lightning
5. Agent Steel - Skeptics Apocalypse

Crushing (Not For The Faint Of Heart)

A little list of albums that have been kicking my ass as of late. Some albums on this list may appear to be "odd" choices, but "crushing" in this context does not necessarily mean heavy. It could be referring to the emotional intensity of the release or the literal heavy pounding sound. Hope you enjoy.

1. Esoteric - The Pernicious Enigma
2. Ahab - The Divinity Of Oceans
3. Agalloch - The Mantle
4. Warning - Watching From A Distance
5. Ulcerate - The Destroyers Of All

2012 Musical Perusals

My list of favourites and interests for this year ordered roughly in descending order. My new years resolution is to branch out a bit and listen to new and unfamiliar genres, metal and non-metal.

Edit: Anything above about a 7/10 I'll keep here. Now with approximate rating in a .5 scale and ordered according to **replay value** i.e how often I listen to them. AND now with some comments, adding them gradually.

1. Enslaved - RIITIIR
2. Pharaoh - Bury The Light
3. Anglagard - Viljans Öga
4. Overkill - The Electric Age
5. The Foreshadowing - Second World

A List Of Great Debut Albums

A lot of bands have great debut albums. Obviously this list is just a fraction of all the great debut albums out there, but it's a start. I'll keep expanding this list continuously, so all suggestions are welcome. My favourite genres are Doom, Black and Gothic Metal, but I also like Progressive, Thrash and Death Metal. All albums on this list are at least worth an 8/10 rating. I included genres of each album as well.

1. 40 Watt Sun - The Inside Room
2. Ablaze In Hatred - Deceptive Awareness
3. A Forest Of Stars - The Corpse Of Rebirth
4. After Forever - Prison Of Desire
5. Agalloch - Pale Folklore

The Greatest Power Metal Albums Of All Time

The best Power Metal albums by the best bands in the genre. The albums are not in any specific order, at least after the first 10. I placed more than 1 album per band cause they really deserve to be here. Feedback is appreciated.

Note: I edited the list and changed the title because there are albums that deserve to be here and I felt 20 albums are not enough

1. Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part I
2. Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part II
3. Angra - Temple Of Shadows
4. Angra - Rebirth
5. Stratovarius - Visions

Drone Metal: The Slow Darkside

It's always the same riff… the same bass… for some reason you can't stop listening to it… it's appealing. The whole sound summons you into a spiral, a void… It's always the same thing, over and over again... it's driving you crazy, demented… it's so loud that you'll beg for someone to kill you. But the music won't let it! The music is up to kill from the inside, it's your soul it wants! That chord, trembling over and over again… ''please kill me… please for the love of God, somebody kill me!!! I can't stand it anymore!''

1. Melvins - Lysol
2. Earth - Earth 2 - Special Low Frequency Version
3. Earth - Phase 3: Thrones And Dominions
4. Boris - Absolutego
5. Thrones - Alraune
