Bands That Represent Everything I Hate About Modern Metal.

Metal in 2015 is a sick beast. The result of this has been prolonged exposure to a number of cancers that have contaminated the genre.

The symptoms of this illness can be defined as follows:

1. Overproduction (but not well produced)
2. Overutilisation of keyboards over guitars.
3. Pitchshifted over tweaked pop vocals.

1. Agalloch
2. Amon Amarth
3. Be'lakor
4. Insomnium
5. Epica

Ten Favourite Metallica Tunes

It's been over 22 years since I first heard Metallica back in the glorious early 1990s. And still the band rocks my world big time.

For probably the first time EVER I present a list that defies convention. The second half of the list was extremely hard as I could've easily had most of Master of Puppets or Ride The Lightning on it.

1. Orion - Master Of Puppets
2. Whiplash - Kill 'Em All
3. Outlaw Torn - Load
4. Disposable Heroes - Master Of Puppets
5. My Friend Of Misery - Metallica

Megadeth - From Best To Worst

Of my favourite three bands (other 2 are Iron Maiden and Iced Earth) Megadeth is easiest to compartmentalise in terms of how much I enjoy their albums.

It should be noted that I can usually scrape a few enjoyable songs from each Megadeth album other than Risk. I've also included Hidden Treasures which has some of my favourite Megadeth songs of all time 99 Ways To Die and Angry Again

1. Megadeth - So Far, So Good... So What?
2. Megadeth - Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?
3. Megadeth - Countdown To Extinction
4. Megadeth - Rust In Peace
5. Megadeth - Hidden Treasures

So you're in some sandy shit hole with nothing but yourself and an armoured division for company. There's some freedom hating bad guys and they don't just have to die, they have to be annihilated and turned to fine red mist.

So here's Deadone's list of albums to get the blood pumping, the eyes seeing red and the trigger finger itchy.

1. Bolt Thrower - Realm Of Chaos
2. Cavalera Conspiracy - Inflikted
3. Dismember - Death Metal
4. Entombed A.D. - Back To The Front
5. Gorefest - La Muerte

2. Anthrax - Among The Living
3. Anthrax - Persistence Of Time

Fave Metal Albums/EPs 1991 -2000

Period 1991-2000 is perhaps one of the most understated periods of metal because of the decline of commercial metal and the emergence of grunge and then nu-metal.

But the period saw release of some kick arse releases. In fact for yours truly it was a major milestone in metal (does help I got into metal around 1992). These are my favourite albums/EPs from the period.

1. Alice In Chains - Dirt
2. Alice In Chains - Jar Of Flies
3. Anthrax - Sound Of White Noise
4. Arch Enemy - Stigmata
5. Blaze Bayley - Silicon Messiah

Top 40 Albums That Blow My Poseur Mind

To walk the path of the metal poseur is to pick the plumpest of mainstream fruits and succour the sweet secretions contained within. It is the art of walking with giants of mainstream underground extremism whilst maintaining one foot firmly on the part of pop monumentalism.

The path is dangerous for the faux fur of metal consumerism is a tempting demon whore that claws at the inner self of underground triumphalism. These are the eagles that soar through the mind galleries of every metal poseur, no matter how compartmentalised their singularity may be.

1. Alice In Chains - Dirt
2. Anthrax - Volume 8 - The Threat Is Real
3. Artillery - By Inheritance
4. Blind Guardian - Imaginations From The Other Side
5. Blind Guardian - Nightfall In Middle-Earth

Edge Of Sanity - Best To Worst

Edge of Sanity is one of my favourite bands even if their discography varies in terms of quality. Though it could never be said these guys didn't try something new. And when they got it right, it was mindblowing. I've included EPs cause I absolutely love Until Eternity Ends and couldn't exclude it as such.

1. Edge Of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow
2. Edge Of Sanity - Crimson
3. Edge Of Sanity - Until Eternity Ends
4. Edge Of Sanity - The Spectral Sorrows
5. Edge Of Sanity - Cryptic

Ten Favourite Carcass Tunes

Carcass be one of my favourite bands ever. Due to a smaller number of releases than my other favourite bands (e.g. Iron Maiden, Megadeth), it's easy to come up with a list of my 10 favourite Carcass tunes.

It's a real mixed bag covering most of their career and most of their releases.

1. Corporal Jigsore Quandary - Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious
2. Doctrinal Expletives - Heartwork
3. Embryonic Necropsy And Devourment - Symphonies Of Sickness
4. Genital Grinder II - Wake Up And Smell The... Carcass
5. Hepatic Tissue Fermentation II - Tools Of The Trade

1. Accept - Stalingrad
2. Anthrax - Worship Music
3. Amon Amarth - Twilight Of The Thunder God
4. Arsis - A Celebration Of Guilt
5. Bathory - Nordland II

My Top 10 Heavy Metal Labels

Love them or hate them but there is no denying that record labels are the driving force behind a lot of our favourite bands.

After all without the labels, many bands would remain unknowns languishing in small clubs and garages.

In the old days the labels used to specialise in specific genres. So for example, if you liked Death Metal then Nuclear Blast and Earache were a safe bet. Made shopping easier!

1. Noise Records - Germany
2. Roadrunner Records - Netherlands
3. Earache Records - United Kingdom
4. Century Media - United States of America
5. Nuclear Blast - Germany

A Bizarre List Of Top 20 Death Metal Albums

I'll be the first to admit I haven't got a clue about Death Metal. A lot of the traditional DM faves ala Death or Obituary have never appealed to me, let alone the uber technical side of the genre.

So here's a list of my top 20 Death Metal albums in alphabetical order. I have avoided blatantly Melodic Death Metal stuff ala Dark Tranquillity but have included the more heavier ones ala Carcass and Edge of Sanity.

1. Aborted - The Archaic Abattoir
2. Atheist - Piece Of Time
3. Bolt Thrower - Realm Of Chaos
4. Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal
5. Carcass - Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious

Favourite Album By Year

Well here's a challenge - my favourite albums for each year since 1980. A challenge because in some instances there's too many awesome albums to pick from and in other years not many stand outs.

In the end the list turns out to not be a list of overall favourites as some years featured more than one awesome album.

1. Carcass - Surgical Steel
2. Accept - Stalingrad
3. Anthrax - Worship Music
4. Overkill - Ironbound
5. Megadeth - Endgame

Top 15 Groove Metal Albums

Often loathed by fans of more underground forms of Metal, groove metal nonethless offers the metal fan a heavy yet song based and catchy listening experience. This list captures 15 of the most interesting groove metal albums (my opinion of course).

Not surprising genre pioneers Pantera dominate in the same fashion that Slayer and Metallica dominate many Thrash lists.

1. Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power
2. Machine Head - Burn My Eyes
3. Lamb Of God - Sacrament
4. Anthrax - Sound Of White Noise
5. Sepultura - Chaos A.D.
