When a band releases two albums in the same year, I always have the feeling that they had the material to release one good album, and released two just for business reasons, recording some fillers to reach the required playing time.

Luckily, System Of A Down didn't follow this trend in 2005 when they released, over a period of 6 months, their 4th and 5th albums, Mezmerize and Hypnotize, recording them in the same time frame. Since oddities are surely not new to the Armenian guys, the two album titles are exactly synonyms, and the two album artworks clearly relate to each other. This is, quite obviously, reflected in the music: Hypnotize ends up being a coherent follow-up.

Best.Album.Ever.

It's nice but IMO Toxicity is the best System Of A Down album and Mezmerize is the second.

For me its their best album-every song is so infectious, save for the intro and the last two tracks.

How the hell is this vastly superior to Hypnotize despite the fact that both albums were released in the same year...

This album manages to write completely catchy radio hit pop songs, and turns them into a heavy crazy madness. Daron's songwriting style is most prominent in this album. For me, this rivals Toxicity.

Massive letdown album -- and same goes for Hypnotize -- and I've felt this right after its release. Only B.Y.O.B. and Sad Statue are some kind of good songs, but even those didn't get much repeated listens for me. Also Daron on main vocals doesn't work

Underrated at 8.2/10. I would say it's SOAD's 2nd best after Toxicity (9.4/10) and is full of great songs, each of which are highly memorable.

9.3/10 for me - 'B.Y.O.B.' is the standout track. The rest of the album is also great (minus 'Lost In Hollywood').

I much prefer this one to Toxicity, eventhough I stilll don't think much to this. "B.Y.O.B" in is a fun song, but I can't find much else on this album that interests me, the lyrics especially are cringy imo.

That is surprising to read, I mean about Toxicity: it was huge album when it was released, it was a massive album, almost everybody had heard about it, Chop Suey, Aerials and title track were played everywhere. And while I'm not a total fan of its musical style or of the band in general, I can still admit a good release, Toxicity had plenty of good songs, but Mezmerize has pretty much only B.Y.O.B. IMO it would be impossible to prefer this to Toxicity.

I've never seemed to be able to get into Toxicity, which is unfortunate because it's always regarded as their best, so it feels like I've always missed out on it, maybe in time I will learn to appreciate it more. B.Y.O.B. has always been one of my favourite SOAD songs, I've never really found much else by SOAD I like, I will have to keep listening.

Yeah, there was a point at which I began struggling to enjoy the Avenged Sevenfold albums from the 2000s nearly as much as I did in sixth form, and it was entirely myself to blame - you'll have occasional nostalgia bursts with songs from it, but I'm not sure that magic feeling ever properly comes back

Have a hard time not enjoying most of SOAD's work. It's all too catchy to really be offensive. Some songs are much better than others, but none are really horrible. Revenge is not a good song, but it's followed up by Cigaro which is probably the best song on the album.
