"I think Jim no longer wants to write new music for Fates Warning. I think this may be our last album. And this was a kind of way to say that. We all still want to tour, but as far as new music, I think it's done." - Ray Alder, 2020.

I can't find a more fitting way to end this year than a review of what appears to be Fates Warning's final album.

I was aiming to spend the entire Friday listening to this but life had other plans and I *only* managed two full spins (which was still two and a half hours of my time ). The only comment I can make right now is that it sounds and feels really beautiful. I know it is not a very metal thing to say but this is what I get from the album after two listens and I don't find it to be a flaw at all. And one more thing:

"The Longest Shadow Of The Day"

I am not super impressed. Biggest let down is 20 minutes to long, but its not bad, but their have better ones. One thing is sure, band writes and are better song writers as Dream Thaatre. Even Marcel agreed whit me there, they are , was and will be.

20 minutes too long you say?! I disagree...
I've always said FW are better songwriters than DT. FW have never released something unlistenable or weak, DT unfortunately has.

Yes 2 songs had soft touch, to soft, but this is good, This album has something majestic what turns you listen it. Band has some way or touch to somehow write decent albums.

A decent album, but I agree with Radu, it's far too long, and the whole sound feels a bit flat and damp, it's hard to get all that excited by a lot of it. In a fairly strong year for prog, this is not a notable highlight for me.

Obviously depends on tastes, but for those into modern prog bands, a year with new Protest The Hero, Caligula's Horse, Intronaut and Haken (even if I'm not fond of them so much) is a good start, add in older bands like Green Carnation, Psychotic Waltz, Pure Reason Revolution and Conception coming back, more established acts like Pain Of Salvation, Hail Spirit Noir, Oceans Of Slumber, Enslaved putting out stuff, up-and-coming acts like Thurisaz, The Reticent, Wills Dissolve, Barishi, Vulkan, DGM, Sweven... there's a lot going on in the progsphere, and they're not all amazing releases, but a lot of them are very solid (as evidenced by the reviews that I've given to about half the bands I've listed). I'd say prog is having a very decent year

Huge list. Haken, Caligula Hourse are big names in prog, same as PoS. To me winter are P Waltz from all. Turisaz and Enslaved still we look in bm genre. But to me Waltz and this band is bug
bigger as those bands, those two are out of genre, your list are more to those what likes prog metal.

Ray comments about "The Last Song": "I think Jim no longer wants to write new music for Fates Warning. I think this may be our last album. And this was a kind of way to say that. We all still want to tour, but as far as new music, I think it's done."

So yeah...pretty straightforward statement imo. Sadly.

When i saw the title of the last song of the record, litteraly called "The Last Song", i´ve became obviously suspicious that this record was going to be their final one. Well, if this is really the end of Fates Warning, i think they´ve ended their journey with a very good record overall. Not their best one, off course, but one that has amazing moments and dwells over their more Progressive Metal side, not forgetting at all their heaviness and soft side aswell. Songs like "The Destination Onward", "Now Comes The Rain", "The Way Home", "Under the Sun", "Scars", "Begin Again" and "The Longest Shadow Of The Day" are for me the highlights of this CD.

If this is really the end of the band, i want to thank and complement Fates Warning for the wonderful career they´ve had over the years, being one the most influential bands in the Progressive Metal genre.

It would make sense. Matheos has Arch/Matheos and can also put out solo material, and Alder just started a solo career. It would be a shame though, they really stepped things up with these last three albums, best they've been since their heyday IMO.

I like it, quite a lot of tasteful melodies and riffing. BUT... it's way too many songs and after two listens I have a hard time pointing out any killer tracks, most of the stuff just plods along nice and well but it rarely leaves any marks. The production is a bit "muddy" as well, sounds like they recorded on a tighter budget compared to the previous one. I'll give it some more listening before I give my rating.
