Seventh album Imaginaerum is the band's second with new singer Anette, and comes with the added twist of an accompanying feature-length film next year. Nightwish who have always been at the forefront of symphonic metal, provide this latest addition to the catalogue with good intentions. Although presented as a stand-alone album, it perhaps pushes the line between creative indulgence and focused musicianship too far.
I like it from the 1st listen. In fact im listening for 2nd time right now, maybe i will change my rating later, i had listen some good folk metal in this. =D
There is something with this album, it sounds better with every listen. At first i didn't like it much, after a few times i find it very enjoyable. You just have to dive into it and like it or not.

Might have to go back to it. I gave up after 2 goes, found it very poor. Century Child still the best.
I was somehow expecting more from NW since it took them 4 years to make a new album. I think Tuomas is one of the best composers on the metal scene, i know it's hard to write for the whole orchestra and make it sound perfect, but altogether it just doesn't sound good to me.
Everything sounds more like a movie score than a song one would listen to without watching a movie. And Anette's childish voice doesn't fit in the songs, but i'm used to this
I'm planning to buy the instrumental version and we'll see then, maybe it will be better (like DPP was), by now my rating is 6.
Edit: I give a 10 to the instrumental version, it's fantastic as usual overall this brings my rating for this CD pack to 8.
If Tarja's fans complained after the release of "Dark Passion Play" for it being so different from the past ones, now they can complain even more because now Nightwish goes even further.
Personally, I enjoyed this album. "Storytime", "I Want My Tears Back", "Scaretale", "Turn Loose The Mermaids" and "The Crow, The Owl And The Dove" are all great songs in my opinion.
I have to admit that at some point I wondered if one could call this "power (metal)", I think it has less and less "power" but the "symphonic" aspect is still there (a lot).
I could give a "9" rate to this one but still with so many great songs, I feel the album is missing something. I just don't feel the songs have a continuation, they seam to be all very isolated from each other but it might just be me.
Nightwish assault my ears every time i listen to "Imaginaerum", in a good way of course. What keeps this album from being a masterpiece is the last half were everything turns a bit "slow" and filled with ballads and mid tempo. By the time i got to "Last Ride of The Day" i was irremediably turned off. Anyway, this attempt scratched perfection!

Well ya, for movies like Avatar. Nearly four million is a very generous budget, considering some directors manage to release some really great films on budgets well under the million dollar mark.
Well, that forces the movie to focus on other things aside of the visuals and the music (which already dissapointed a considerable amount of listeners).
I actually enjoyed this album, as someone who lived off this type of music but now listens to Doom and Death more. It''s a step up from the last crappy album. Not very metal, but pleasant all the same.
For me its the release of the last year...cant help myself not to like almost everything there...and i especially love how Anette proved herself as a talented singer worth of Nightwish
...I strongly encourage you to listen to the album again, at least two more times...

An album combined with Jazz, Folk and Power elements, yet remaining the traits of Gothic genre. The first play it was already a masterpiece to me. The second masterpiece since Oceanborn. I did not discover any repetition, even there is, it does not create any uneasy feelings to me as those repetitons sometimes are necessary for a strong conceptual album. Vocals and all instruments are really well blended. I did not expect they made such a good album, I almost given up listening this band after Oceanborn. Anthrax - Worship Music and Nightwish - Imaginaerum gave me big surprises in 2011.

I can hear the jazz, folk and power, but where do you hear gothic in this album?
Many listeners always confused with Power Metal and Gothic Metal.
They always thought Power Metal sings by female vocalist or using Sapora voclas are considered Gothic. Band members always like to making use of make ups and fashion to give their listeners a strong hint - Hey ! we're Gothic or whatsoever gene.
Gothic Metal is different from Power Metal.
1) It is not that fast compare to Power Metal
2) In Power Metal, The drums and bass have to be like twin brothers, drummer and bassist have to work very well in order to make wonder. Not in Gothic.
3) In Gothic Metal, Keyboardist is the one to act as an organiser in between drummer-bassist and vocalist-guitarist. Due to the role of keyboardist, the atmosphere is usually delivering a "vast" or celestial feeling.
I'm surprised I like this so much, I expected much worse after Dark Passion Play. Toumas takes you on a journey though his Hans Zimmer-inspired fantasy world, with epic songs like Ghost River, I Want My Tears Back and Last Ride Of The Day. Sure, it's more like movie score music than metal, but who cares? And Anette has really outdone herself in this album, especially on Scaretale and Song of Myself. I even like Slow, Love, Slow because of her, although I hate jazz. And when I finally accepted her as the singer of Nightwish, she has been kicked out But i wish her the best, and hope the next Nightwish album will be as good as this.
