Let me tell you how I know that an album is hard to digest but great. When I put it on for the first time, most of the songs blur together, it's impossible to tell them apart. The first impression about the album is accentuated by those cool fragments of songs that remain in my memory. During the second listen I manage to hear most of those fragments. Just when I'm about to play the album for the third time to get those last cool bits, I realise that there are some more cool bits that I picked up during my second listen. With every consecutive listen, the number of cool bits increases, and my mind connects them to respective songs. After 10 listens all bits are in place, the picture is complete and my smile is wider than a six-lane freeway, because the album is brilliant.

Here we are again. I say that because Enslaved are beating the proverbial "Nordic Black Metal" horse to death. It seems like this is becoming a standard out of the Northern European Black Metal scene these days. Scary makeup, growling vocals, droning guitars, and a complete lack of direction other than to throw in some "evil" lyrics. Like anyone will ever go as far as Mercyful Fate did in the 80's lyrically? Doubtful, and I haven't seen anyone do it yet.

30.09.2010 Over the last couple records, Enslaved seemed to be moving towards metal middle age... from Black Metal to Black Floyd. AEO sees them continuing the prog path, but at the same time drawing from the best elements of their past work. The tone of this is harsher. At times they show the familiar gallop of their old BM works, at others the weirdness of Monumension and the confidence of Below The Lights. i love this album so much i want to fuck it.

Probably. It'll likely win another Spellemann award too.

I'd say it's probably their prettiest ;] Isa would be if it didn't have a naked man in the middle of the eye.

we'll see. it's certainly possible. depends how it sounds (we can assume it will be at least pretty good based upon their last several albums) and the strength of the competition.
bard - 13.08.2010 at 05:15
Rating: 10 Maybe it's just me, but Axioma Ethica Odini feels like a very awkward title for an Enslaved album.
ThatOtherGuy - 16.08.2010 at 03:58
Of all the things we are critizing is the album cover... that must mean thats the most important part of the album

I never thought I'd ever say this about an Enslaved album...but those samples contained some of the most 'evil' sounding riffs I've heard in a while. My interest is very very piqued right now.
vezzy - 19.08.2010 at 19:31
Rating: 9 Huh, I wasn't THAT blown away by it, but it sounds great, so yeah, this is definitely maintaining my interest.
Grimskallen - 20.08.2010 at 12:14
Enslaved has delivered solid release after release, I doubt this will be an exception. However I am not digging the cover art nor the album title...
!J.O.O.E.! - 21.08.2010 at 00:31
Rating: 8 Samples sound pretty decent; not exactly blowing me away but the fact they haven't softened their sound further is definitely a good sign. Even sounds like they've reverted back to the sound of Ruun rather than that of Vertebrae.
Gopherhawk - 21.08.2010 at 05:40
Rating: 7 Im really looking forward to this. Vertebrae blew me away and I like the way the band appears to be headed. The art looks good to me and the song titles are pretty original so upon release I'm snatching this one up.
Fenrisborg - 06.09.2010 at 23:07
Rating: 9 The first song titled "Ethica Odini" has been released:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHWVRaiS00Q&feature=player_embedded

And it's awesome. It's a return to the sound of Ruun and and not a continuation of Vertebrae. So it looks like the Enslaved sound won't be watered down anymore!
worship_non - 09.09.2010 at 02:31
The song's crap. They seem to be completely playing it safe these days, delivering what's expected of them, plastic "progressive" (ie not really progressing anything) metal with no passion, anger, emotion, anything.

It would be kind of hard to water their sound down any more, imo.

Been listening to the album a couple of times, really digging some of the riffs but unfortunately there's also a fair share of somewhat dodgy parts. The first two songs are not very good.
Elio - 29.09.2010 at 00:15
Rating: 8 Good shit guys, better than Vertebrae, me approves.
Introspekrieg - 29.09.2010 at 04:17
Can't stop listening to this album... gets deeper with every spin. I sense a maudlin of the Well influence on the track Night Sight... perhaps it is about astral projection?
BitterCOld - 29.09.2010 at 04:56
Rating: 10 Got it today, listened to the first six songs about twice, but real life kept interrupting and preventing me from a straight through listen.

based upon first impressions, i really, really, really like this album and hope to have enough time to listen to it and get a review up before i take off on a (long deserved) holiday.

i already know what the soundtrack to my great adventure will be, though!

o_O? Ethica Odini is an incredible opener and one of the best on the album along with Giants! But yes, I agree the second song is fairly weak in comparison.

Rating: 9 I listened 7 times to the whole album since yesterday, so yeah I guess this album is one of their best if not their best work, an earth shattering monster of an album, I can already predict that this will be on top of my end of the year list.
Daniell - 29.09.2010 at 22:44
Rating: 10 An incredible album all the way. A few listens more and it'll be the album of 2010 for me. Enslaved managed to impress me, almost as usual (I didn't love Vertebrae so much).

Rating: 7 Butt-kickin' madness.

Maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but imo Enslaved (right after Ulver) is Norway's finest band.
3dd - 01.10.2010 at 02:40
Rating: 9 One thing that I like in Enslaved, it's that they never get influenced by anything, they keep the roots, and in every album they release gets better and better. The riffs are outstanding and original, the epic feeling is present in every track. One of the best albums of the year, without any doubt.
J. N. - 01.10.2010 at 03:14
  This album made me aroused.
ivanhoe3 - 04.10.2010 at 19:20
Like dant3x says.....they keep the roots.....! i strongly agree one of the best metal albumo of 2010
Darkside Momo - 05.10.2010 at 23:40
Rating: 9 Halfway through the third song, I can already say it's awesome. The perfect balance they always strived to attain. Now this one will be difficult to top!
In Bone Factory - 06.10.2010 at 21:26
Rating: 9 Very good and one the best albums of Enslaved but still in lower position than Ruun and Isa
