I feel that it is my duty to write a review for this album, because this is the album that pretty much got me into Black Metal. Also, I find Enslaved to be the band which managed to fuse Viking metal with Black metal in a very interesting, and 'different' way. First of all lyrically. How come? Well they are one of the rare bands who don't contradict themselves with being both pagan and satanic. They have also changed their style a lot during the years in a sense that they mixed a lot of progressive elements into their music, but they did that in a good way.

Dude . . . I must listen to this

Don't go in expecting something similar to their contemporary style.

I've checked it out recently, and yeah, it is quite a bit of a different sound as Axioma Ethica Odini or Ruun but it seems to sound kick ass still to me

I didn't actually expect much from enslaved's debut album, but it is in fact a great slice of atmospheric black metal, the word 'atmospheric' being expressed here. The album channels such a wondrous atmosphere through the various symphonic passages, and although it isn't quite as raw as you would expect a black metal album to be, it still holds the key ingredient to any extreme metal album:consistency. Each song has its own significance, and with the opening song we can see that the band tried hard to distance themselves from any other musical genre at that time. This is a great place to start if you're interested in listening to enslaved in the 90's.

This and rost, for virtually all the same reasons.

Yeah, agree with that. 'Frost' is such a "chilling" record, but it works quite well.

The blueprint for everything that came after. Super-innovative for the early black metal scene in Norway.

Interesting that they became a little bit more aggressive on Frost after this album, for whatever reason I expected the opposite trend, although I guess it's not a huge difference. I probably prefer this one slightly; it's very listenable, and likeable enough, although the keyboard parts are pretty cheesy I find

This is pretty atmospheric indeed and I think it's pretty different from other 90's black metal albums. I guess Enslaved has been experimental from the start.

This is actually my favorite Enslaved release. I've struggled to get into most of their discography, especially their later progressive black stuff, not that it's bad, just not my thing, but this has always remained one of my early Norwegian scene classics along with many others.

There's a lot to admire here! Norvegr, in particular, is ravishing!
