Since there's no point in talking about Porcupine Tree in the foreseeable future, let's just focus on this new Steven Wilson's solo album as it is. I've been wanting to write about it ever since I first heard it and figured it'd be an easy feat. Making up my mind about it turned out to be harder than I thought for, I have to admit, surprising reasons.

So far, I really love this album, but as is the case with most of what Steven Wilson creates, it's going to take a few more listens before I can be absolutely sure on how I feel about this.

Unfortunately yes. I am aware of what Wilson is capable of, but after GFD + Storm Corrosion i have no high hopes for whatever he wants to drown his fans with

I see you have bought The Raven That Refused to Sing, though. I knew you couldn't think he was all that bad.

And actually, after listening to this quite a few times, I am very nearly about to give it a 10, which I don't do often. This is probably my favorite of all his solo albums so far; he seems to have really outdone himself this time. For now I think I'll just give it a 9, but this rating may change in the future.

Steven took me by surprise on this release. Its fucking amazing IMO. I apologize for doubting his new Opus prior to its release. This will remain a top pick for 2013

Is it really that good? I remember checking out Grace For Drowning, but after 10 minutes of agony I thought it's better if I go out and listen to the birds...They weren't boring y' know...

This is different from his other solo albums , it may depend on your taste to get bored or not ... but this is definitely worth checking out for prog rock fans . and it's more fun than anything he has done lately.

This album is insane. Took a couple listens, but SW has outdone himself yet again.
Also, second best use of autotune i've ever heard (to anathema's closer)

You really can't stand it? It's good music though, at least for me I do agree however about Steven, he really needs to go back!

The 70's prog rock binge that these prog metal bands are on right now just irritates me! If I want that I will throw on a Yes or King Crimson album. Ugh!

I'm giving one more point because some passages are truly gorgeous. However after multiple listens, I can't help to think that Steven's vocals are on a much much much lower level than its instrumentation. I grind my teeth every time he opens his mouth.

I agree. I think that they're trying to reinvent the 70's prog rock genre, but it just sounds like a copy of older stuff I've heard before. With that said, this is a solid album. Original? No. Well crafted? Yes.

Beautiful music. And what I really like about Steven Wilson is that none of his records sounds similar to another.

If this album was released in the 70's, it would become one of those albums that people pick up and listen to solely because of its obscurity. That should tell how sub-par this albums is.

Perhaps it would if your claim was true. Care to explain how this album is sub-par?

I really don't understand why everyone is calling this album a masterpiece... I mean, it's good and all, but hardly anything special. It just kinda plays off tropes from classic prog. The only thing I found really "standout" about it was the production, which was usual Steven Wilson greatness.
